@vahnj @noiob Sure. I believe it would be a really important feature for other things, though. For instance, I might trust this server for my direct messages and private posts, but want to make sure they never leave this instance (or a specific network of trusted instances).
I suppose this should be something I bring up on the Mastodon Github though, eh?

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what Mastodon is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

@vahnj @noiob I also suppose I'd look for different technical solutions to that problem, e.g. instead of "post to public timelines" visibility of posts you can decide to post only to a subset of the fediverse that is user-configurable. It's such a hassle to need multiple accounts...

@vahnj @noiob I suppose I signed up for the wrong thing then, I never understood from the server description that you wouldn't federate with the whole rest of the network but just keep a small whitelist... maybe you could put that info somewhere more prominently?

@noiob But... what is that useful for, exactly? Users decide what they want to see by themselves. Where is downside of federating with places you *don't* trust? Is it about the federated timeline, or something else too?

@micahflee Probably once this actually works properly and people can get an account without a hassle? ^^

@noiob Say... do we *exclusively* federate with mastodon.social here? Because that would be really sad, people are getting into instances all over the place. But I can't read or follow people from elsewhere, as it seems... //cc @vahnj

@moho1@social.troll.academy Also ich kann deinen Krams nicht sehen und dir auch nicht folgen. humhum.

@slipstream @Gargron Gosh I will *so* have to get used to that xD
I figured out by now that I have to copypaste that link, yea - it's kind of annoying to have to do that though, I wonder why it can't work more like the "Remote follow" button.

@verkatert Was bedeutet das für "private" Posts? Heißt das, jeder der eine eigene Instanz betreibt, kann alle Privaten Toots und Direktnachrichten abschnorcheln? Das wäre ja Privacy-Fail.

PSA: If you are in the web view of a remote instance of some user or toot, you cannot directly reply/boost/fav.

But you can copypaste the URL into your local Mastodon server's "Search" field, then it allows you to interact!

Wasn't obvious to me, so maybe boost this if it helped you. :)

Meh, hashtags seem to be implemented badly. In my opinion, a hashtag should mean that you broadcast to the whole fediverse, such that from everywhere, what's shown on hashtag is the same... mastodon.social/@Gargron/16691

@Gargron is there any way to allow users to reply when they visit a thread or toot on a different instance? I see boost and fav buttons on here, but absolutely no way to reply to you...

mastodon.social/@Gargron/16691

@GinnyMcQueen@mastodon.social I... eh... I suppose that happens sometimes when I open my mouth, no matter the topic. :flushed:

@zigg I think it helps to see Mastodon as essentially eMail, but with a fancier interface and all mails being globally broadcast (Yes, even private ones.)
