@Felthry Ironically enough, the actual *mining* was boring as fuck since ores were randomly distributed, not localized into followable veins or anything. So the efficient mining was just algorithmic volume-removal.

@Felthry yeah that makes sense but the base game didn't tease me enough that figuring out a mod stack felt worth the effort.

I guess what I really wanted was actual industrial supply chains and more localized resources. Which I'm aware that mods do, but eh.

I should maybe pick up Factorio though.

@Felthry Minecraft is in the category of "games I really wanted to like, but fell flat"

@Felthry Minecraft exploration is like 3/4th of the way there for me, but that last fourth is pretty important. The problem is it was hard to try and collect resources in any sort of non-local or directed way.

The big thing that both of these had was the sensation that if you just picked a direction and started moving, you'd run into *something* new and interesting.

Actually, from what I watched of my partner playing Breath of the Wild, that looked pretty dang solid too.

I feel like Subnautica was such a good exploration game that I don't know if anything else will ever really compare.

@KawaSeadrake helps a lot that ED actually had a scale to it.

@KawaSeadrake Elite Dangerous felt better than that, even if I didn't actually SEE much or anything of the planets I was nominally exploring. It felt like there was an Unknown to wander into.

@KawaSeadrake I'm actually really down with the idea of a lonely, atmospheric wandering-game but I don't feel like it quite delivers on that. "Land at a random spot, walk to every flagged interesting thing within half a kilometer, take off again" doesn't feel exploration-y to me.

@KawaSeadrake yeah the word-collection is the most compelling part of it so far to me

No Man's Sky has a lot of individual *pieces* that feel like they ought to be compelling, but somehow just aren't quite clicking into place for me.

Honestly the phrase "I am upset when we are not about me?" has been SO USEFUL for me to check myself with when I want to insert myself into conversations or whatever.

Y'ever feel like scifi (and especially videogames) just don't quite understand how much *wealth* a spaceship represents, especially a large one?
