LKiaB thoughts, consent
This is less about wanting perfect queer representation, and more about feeling like the game isn't actually communicating clearly or intentionally.
LKiaB thoughts, consent
There's a pretty serious element of ludonarrative dissonance here, given that, well, it's a game where one of the primary selling points is fucking.
LKiaB thoughts, consent
So I think I've figured out what's bothering me about LKiaB. It makes a lot of superficial nods towards consent, and a lot of people have praised the game for it. However, the structure of the game is *fundamentally about manipulation*, and the little elements of verbal check-in that it offers don't make up for it. I feel like the paper-over attempt feels worse than directly acknowledging that a lot of the characters actions Aren't Okay.
I'm very strongly of the opinion that fiction (both interactive and otherwise) that contains problematic or unethical behavior can have substantial value. I'm also very strongly of the opinion that such fiction should be engaged with mindfully.
Okay so Ladykiller in a Bind is good and charming and fun but it does get dark and manipulation-y in a lot of places, and the content warnings for the scenes near the end are serious business.
It felt pretty clear to me that the writing was aware of the gross/coercive elements, and recognized that they weren't okay. I recommend this game, but caution when playing is warranted.
@Soreth Hi!!! Good to see you on here!!
thoughts on "metaphor"
@starkatt I think having that conversation when one is saddled with the 'metaphorical' label is important.
I think some folks really do feel it as metaphor and find it valuable, and I want to make sure they're covered and supported too.
What I don't want is folks feeling like 'metaphorical' is _definitional_ for these sorts of identities.
Update: "funny" has been updated to "made me laugh so hard I had to go lie down for a minute".
Looks like Ladykiller in a Bind is the first of your game recommendations I'll be playing! It was already on my list, and I guess I'm finally in the mood for something porn-y.
thoughts on "metaphor"
@abbenm @starkatt
I think the study of semiotics has established that at least language is metaphor all the way down. At least if we accept Derrida's insights.

thoughts on "metaphor"
People tend to think that something being "metaphorical" (like furry/kin identity, or mysticism stuff, or lots of other things) makes it less real.
That's kind of deeply missing the point. Our brains are *entirely* metaphorical. Our perception of the world passes through billions of years of evolutionary processing and filtering, and is only tenuously connected to a deeper fundamental truth. Approximations are all we have.
(this thread brought to you by: I bought Shadow of Mordor for like five bucks but that game is frustrating and it turns out eviscerating orcs makes me feel kinda gross right now)
@starkatt none of them are... particularly gay? but just looking through my recommendations on steam, The Beginner's Guide, Papo & Yo, and Dear Esther are all under $10 right now and have great stories, and Kentucky Route Zero is just over $10
