when you're wigglin' your bare toes and you feel something soft and damp very gently *boop* AND THEN SUDDENLY TINY CLAWS AND TEETH #kittenthings
honestly that's my writing advice: don't take it too seriously
look at a meme or a joke, say "Oh ha that's just like my character"
think about what that says about them, can you build on that?
it goes even better with a friend
in a few minutes, them dumbest idea can become tragic backstory, intriguing plot point, a goal, a trait, anything!
know about your characters more than the serious moments, they need something more to have depth
lewd, therapy
@noelle so she's really depressed and she figures she'll order a pizza... or two... or three... and then the pizza delivery guy shows up, and the music starts up, right? And he helps step her through realizing that the incessant dread she feels is about future events which haven't happened yet, rooted in a condemnation of herself which she'd never apply to other people.
hot take about distopias and capitalism
Distopias are everywhere nowadays, in fiction.
I think it's because it is a tool to navigate what's wrong with our world today. Painting a distopia is a way to point at what is problematic around us or where we're going.
But I think there is something else too. Critique of capitalism is everywhere. You can even see it in mainstream media. Capitalism is fine with it. What it can't stand are alternatives. ⬇️
"Galactic Community: Oh no, a giant cylinder is destroying Earth, what will we do?
Kirk: I’m gonna take this stolen Klingon Kia that we barely know how to fly and was dispensing poison food up until last week, and I’m gonna time travel into the past convince some whales to come back with us, abduct a marine biologist, and let the two crew drunks change the course of history by giving out futuristic tech. So no worries, right?"
The one I keep coming back to is "Pillar of Autumn" from Halo 1. Something about that name is just perfection.
But the new fast-upcoming contender is "Weeping Somnambulist" from The Expanse.
