@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz i think you can! and if your interest is in tech, i can even help you do that! (seriously, hmu on discord sometime!)
also, the prescriptive of the helped is actually the part i'm concerned about
my view is that i would prefer more people get helped instead of expending yourself on only one and getting trapped with a problem that prevents you from doing the help you want to do
@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz meanwhile, i think you shouldn't do that, because permanently losing your mental health is far too high a price when convincing someone else who it wouldn't damage is an option
if you are presented with a situation like that, please don't overextend yourself
it's nice to be dead-set on helping someone, but if you find an alternative, you can help many more people instead of dooming yourself with just the one!
@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz yeah, that was a mess over there--we really do like to follow our neighbours to the south a troubling amount
it especially doesn't help that most people i talk to are so apathetic about the wellbeing of others--but also so against any form of confrontation, meaning that reacting to hate conjures more angst than the original hate
@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz yeah :(
my ideal situation is the largest amount of happiness distributed amongst everyone
i just think that overextension at a large scale would kill a lot more people than it would ultimately save
i think that we should help others how we can, but if you put yourself in a worse situation to do it, you lower your potential to help in the future
@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz it's true that we're facing decreasing resources--but this has the potential to transform the types of people who *would* help, into the types of people who *need* helping
in our broken system, the most effective changes are in policy and organization--and i think those are the things we should fight for
but if we deplatform ourselves by turning everyone who could fight for these changes into people who can't even live, then i think things will get so much worse than they are now
@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz this is true, but sometimes the trade-offs are also larger than people realize
guilting someone into overextending themself opens up the possibility for bad luck to literally kill them
i mean, i'll admit the best case scenario is better–but the worst case scenario is far worse than anything that i would ever want to be responsible for
that's why i disagree with encouraging people to go beyond their means
@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz i don't know if i agree with this part--but mostly because not everyone can help others
everyone has a capacity for helping, and everyone has different needs--so sometimes the result of helping someone with less than you might actually end up damaging everyone more than it helps
this is especially true when you factor in things like disabilities
@codl it's important work
