and the music are just imf files! which are id (software) music files, which can be played in adplay without any modification!
it's the same format used for the music in wolfenstein 3d and a bunch of other games that played adlib music at the time
so! the levels are all basically straight-up arrays!
and now that i can just select files, i can easily get the right ranges for the visualizer~
meta, qrts, a warning (-)
i'm sorry, but if anyone qrts some hateful shit that wouldn't have been in my life if you didn't for an "epic dunk xD", i will probably block you
i can't emphasize enough how much giving harmful ideas a platform to dunk on them is counteractive, and hurts the friends you have that the corrosive rhetoric targets
@SirTapTap qrts are definitely the Bad One
on top of the obvious "signal boosting harmful ideas without consent into your feed" thing, they also allow abusers to harass people through blocks
they were probably birdsite's biggest mistake, and i can't see a way that these aren't going to make the fediverse just generally less happy overall
like, legit, how often have you seen a positive qrt?
meta, qrts (-)
oh no, they are planning on adding qrts to masto
even the possibility of the introduction of a feature that only really gets used to signal-boost corrosive ideas and Discourse onto people's feeds without consent makes me extremely uncomfortable
the fact that it also allows for abusers to harass people through blocks is even worse
what are they even doing
@Mastodon it's true there are a few people who try to work around this with screenshots, but i think the lack of quotes actually makes people less inclined to use its alternatives
which miiight seem paradoxical, but dunk screenshots were generally used to get around specific limitations about quotes, by people who were used to using qrts normally!
but when something doesn't exist normally as a core concept in the space you occupy, all of its derivatives become less common too
@Mastodon also, how quotes interact with blocking is a huuuge problem in a lot of places, because it allows people to violate boundaries
and unless you are giving people the ability to delete posts that quote them with a block, they will continue to be broken by design
this invites harassment in a major way, and after deploying it, will be a Very Hard Mistake to undo
@Mastodon oh no, quote posts
having the ability to airdrop something along with your final word about the thing suuuper-encourages boosting the visibility of things that, well, ain't great
and i mean, you can already link posts with your commentary! but engaging with what lives underneath is opt-in, so it ends up being used very differently
i feel like adding quote posts will make this place so much less kind, and turn "hey look at this garbage"-style posts into a mainstay
@cinnamon yessss!
(also, also, it is imo!)
oh! also the game itself is playable online here if you were curious what it was! (you can also get the data files in the sidebar!)
since it was a DOS sidescroller, that means it didn't have access to particularly advanced video hardware, meaning that smooth scrolling was Very Hard
also music was only through a special synth card (from ad lib)
and every other sound used the PC speaker (the thing that makes your computer beep sometimes)
also, a lot of old game formats are excellent practice since they are so simple!
it's basically free
i should really make a git repo for all the times i randomly decide to make imhex understand the most obscure game formats imaginable
i didn't think i'd get the urge to do this more than once, but here we are!
@bx i am so happy i'm not the only one who has been in this exact situation
also, also! if you haven't seen it yet, this absolutely rules
@whitequark bnnuy
oh hi! i do computers, and sometimes draw stuff~ i like lo-fi things and cute aesthetics!
i also probably like you
