@chr@cybre.space thx again for your s3 guide im doing the migration now

Food, Cookies

@pastelbat is there some kind of opposite word to "crumbly"? i feel like the "soft lacking crumblies" is the thing you're describing here

@noelle @bea this is reasonable!

R is really a pain in the butt to use tho imo

technology take

it's fantastic that tons of people know how to use technology and build stuff

but not everyone should be required to in order to make use of self-hosted services. look at wordpress! it's actually pretty great for that, all things considered

good software intended for broad use should strive to simplify the necessary knowledge for hosting the software as much as possible imo

otherwise it's not intended for broad use, only for technical use

@thefishcrow @mawr yea you see the plugin socket???

that's. those prongs are 4 feet long.

@squirrel nah it's ok to be the admin of an instance without knowing all the technical details. it's ok to rely on others for that!

good software shouldn't require you to understand every component of it in order to use it well too! so it doesn't hurt to bring up if things confuse you bc that means something in the code or UI could be better defined prolly

@squirrel web hosting is a dark secret, i don't even fully understand every piece of it. my knowledge is "jury rigged" level of competence

@squirrel yea!

so S3 is the file storage service. it's basically like a remote file system. that's prolly where your servers' images are.

bea uses all of AWS - that means she uses the service that manages the actual computer server that she hosts the software on, as well as uses their DNS tools so that the glitch.social domain redirects properly to her website!

i don't think there's other stuff there she's using but that's probably the basic gist of it

@squirrel nbd. really you can just think of it as "a bunch of servers that amazon controls that provide lots of different program-y services"

@squirrel "the cloud", it is a spoopy place

if you want i can go over it with you a little bit!

@squirrel oh if this is in response to codl's toot that was just a hypothetical situation to set up the pun

was there another post about a vulnerability?

@squirrel i think one of the top uses is reading/writing to and from S3 for file management stuff

@squirrel sorry

amazon's aws has a lot of different api endpoints you can hit

boto is just a friendlier library written in python that lets you use the cli effectively in python with much more ease than trying to call the command line directly

@squirrel nah not understanding a specific tech doesn't reflect on you at all

boto is just the python aws library: github.com/boto/boto

@Efi "everything the gay touches is yours to rule over, simba"

"but what is the darkness?"

"that, my child, is heteronormativity"
