wow... my taxable income for 2018 went up by 970 USD from 2017.. but my returns went down by 889 USD from 2017.

THANKS REPUBLICAN TAX PLAN I SURE HOPE THOSE BILLIONAIRES ARE ENJOYING THEIR FUCKING TAX BREAKS!

Bleh.. I my head feels like someone started frakking between my eyes and bonus day off for working a 3 day weekend just seems to have left me more stressed out... would have rather had the 3 day weekend.... not that I had a choice.. was my weekend to work.

going to fucking bed and maybe tomorrow will make me feel a little more chill..

We have shed the heavy shells we once crewed, and now roam the stars unencumbered.

re: Work Vent

@kistaro

I don't know... but it drives me nuts. This particular product requires a service that doesn't play nice with other instances of it running in the same region.. but there is literally no reason not to have a easily spun up hot spare ready to go especially when the hardware is in place already.

Work Vent

Oh look a critical service with no redundancy went down in a not 24/7 datacenter, taking one of our flagship products down completely in that region.

This is the 3rd time this week it is happened.

9 months ago, the first time it happened.. I wrote remediation recommendations for the product's team.

THE BIG ONE WAS MOVING THIS SERVICE TO MODERN HARDWARE WITH IPMI AND HOT SPARE!

Guess what they just did...?
FINALLY SPIN THE SERVICE UP ON ONE OUR MODERN COMPUTE BOXES... and decide to stop using the old and busted.

Weather | Bay Area

Severe Flood Watch in affect for the San Jose area

Be careful out there. 101 just after 880 tends to flood about now.

For the record... just because I'm storm dragon doesn't mean this is my fault.

work rant

Holy Shit... thanks for throwing my ass under the bus MR Head of Engineering... I wasn't even oncall... yesterday.

DO I NEED A FUCKING DISCLAIMER THAT OFFERING A SUGGESTION OF HOW TO SOLVE A PROBLEM TO A TEAM MEMBER DOES NOT CONSTITUTE VOLUNTEERING TO WORK ON THE PROBLEM?

So yesterday, shortly after my shift started the day shift oncall hit me up about an issue (out of control log file growth). I offered a couple of suggestions that ended with "if this doesn't work, escalate it to Team X"

Somehow the head of Team X took that as me stating I would fix it.

I was not oncall yesterday.. so when said team member said "Okay, cool, will do." that was the end of it for me.

Apparently, said team member tried those things then snoozed the page for 8 hours... and it did not come up until night shift hand off... at no point did it get escalated by night shift either and so a customer impacting incident went on for 19 hours with no action taken...

Both members of my team involved in this... kinda dropped the ball.. they are also not under my direct supervision since being placed under the new east coast, day shift team leader...

but somehow this engineering manager is trying to throw me under the bus for it. WTF

Thankfully my boss and his boss... and slack and pagerduty show I had literally nothing to do with the whole shit show beyond my suggestion of "try these things, if they don't work, make sure to escalate it."

@amic@nulled.red

100% accurate... although frequently.. I'm copying and pasting from documentation I wrote these days..

@kelseyhusky I felt like shit during the 4 hour drive home. Eventually we opened a support ticket with cisco and had to apply 5 years of backlogged firmware updates to get status lights matching external ports so remote hands could do it.

@kelseyhusky I hate that shit... back in May I was doing some maintenance at one of our remote sites that required hands on.

Long story short.. NetEng thought they had the right link... but the internal port descriptors on this model cisco core router did not match up with the external numbering.

So we played link roulette for 2 hours, I pulled 6 10G fiber links before we gave up because nobody could figure out a way to map the bad link to a physical port.

Why is always friday nights that work shit explodes all over everything?

Mental Health, Capitalism, Workplace, Trans-worry

@wobblewuffess

My workplace has very high profile women, some of whom are transgender, in the ops space. There are cultural issues but there's no reason an ops team can't adapt.

Treat it like any other service issue...

TO: ops-team-x@companyname.website
SUBJ: [ACTION REQUIRED] Data issues with "Sam" API - Manual updates required

Attention X-ops team members,

For the last thirty years, the "gender" API for Sam Lastname has returned an incorrect value, which has propagated to many dependent fields. The API is being corrected, but you will need to manually remediate entries in downstream datastores, including but not limited to your brain, and downstream APIs, including but not limited to pronouns.

Sam is female. Her pronouns are "she" and "her". Please correct datastores as you find them; as with any data corruption issue, errors are expected to persist for some time but should be remediated as they are encountered.

Thank you for your help in remediating this error. A postmortem is not planned at this time. Additional questions can be directed to the API owner, sam-lastname@companyname.website.

--Samantha Lastname

... This approach has been used before in my workplace and has proven remarkably effective. It communicates the important parts (facts, required actions) and important social parts (no room for negotiation, still a professional ops person, didn't magically stop being an ops person in Sarcastic Irritable Ops Person Culture in the last twenty seconds), and is easy to understand. It reads like a joke while being wholly serious, and tends to defuse a lot of tension along the way. Rewrite it to match your company's outage remediation notification format.

re: Mental Health, Capitalism, Workplace, Trans-worry

@kistaro That is fantastic.

Mental Health, Capitalism, Workplace, Trans-worry

So those of you that know me or have known me for a long while probably know I've been on HRT for a good long while.

Even before HRT.. long hair, wearing it down and not in generic tech dude pony tail and some not masculine signalling colors often got people to Ma'am, refer to me with feminine pronouns etc.

So I've been on HRT for a bit over 6 years... with a clean shave (stupid dark facial hair under my nose) people regularly have no idea what I am... outside of work... while I kinda hate the Biblical Origins of my chosen name.. it works well, gender neutral (Which pleases me. Nobody fucking knows if Sam is short for Samuel or Samantha so.. HA) which pleases me.

Anyway where am I going with this.

I'm working on some series health related changes to my life... weight loss being a big one.

As I start to lose abdominal fat... it will be increasingly difficult to hide that fact that I have significant breast tissue and I'm not fucking binding... did not fucking start HRT 6 years go to start binding.

So yes... I work in Tech... but I'm not a programmer.. I'm not a developer.

I'm an Ops person... (Technically... I guess I'm an Operations Engineer specializing in private cloud infrastructural [datacenter operations, management and linux stuff] and starting to transition into a SRE role focused on our public cloud infrastructure over the next year)

As a whole... my experience has been that OPS is pretty fucking dude bro the dudening.

There is not a single woman in my company's entire Operations division (Cloud Ops and Product Ops... there are lots women in our dev teams and Product Management but not Operations)

So where is this going. I want to change my legal name and gender. I'm fucking terrified for what this will mean for my career prospects.

I don't know how to reconcile this shit.

re: My house almost burned down yesterday!

@mawr YIKES D:

That is shadey and scary.

Ughhhhhh.... I got like 2 hours of sleep... want to call in sick... but responsibilities and tasks that only I can do because physical presence and location requirements.

kjfkdfs

Thanks brain... or body.. I spent 6 hours laying in bed... just not sleeping... and 2 more tossing, turning and waking up a lot.
