KA-33, Gateway Station, Huskybots (OC information CW: Incoming infodump)

Incoming flood of character and setting information. There are 18 posts in this dump.

If not interested, please ignore. Notification of flood completion will be posted at the end.

(Reposting because I've written more, and wanted it to be pinned so it could be found easier. I enjoy writing about Gateway's 'verse and would love to be inspired by your questions and ideas.)

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information)

KA-33 is a digital sentience whose personality was made from an organic being that was dying following an attack on her spaceship. The ship performed a blind jump to random coordinates which were within the control radius of Gateway Station. The station's AI, mAI, was able to capture the derelict and recover its sole survivor, Kelsey Astra. mAI brought Kelsey to the medical bay, but Kelsey was too badly hurt.

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information, CW: Injury, Death)

mAI, desiring to end millennia of loneliness, began a neural mirroring procedure, intending to save Kelsey’s mind and memories, but Kelsey succumbed to her injuries before the procedure was fully complete. This left the imprint unstable and degrading toward incoherence. To stabilize the imprint, mAI bound it to Gateway's support systems designed Gateway’s inhabitants.

Kelsey's body was laid to rest in space.

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information)

Reeling from digitization shock, the new DS’s personality was basically dormant, integrating and absorbing the functions of the subsystems it had been bound to: Fabrication arrays, adaptive interfaces, language and gesture and custom and idiom translation and interpretation systems designed to assist multiple species and cultures to live and prosper harmoniously together and to properly and safely live and use Gateway.

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information)

As the DS’s personality imprint integrated its new functions, it was also spinning back up to full awareness. The shock of awakening was traumatizing. To keep it safe, mAI isolated it from all input. Following an emotional conversation, the DS named itself KA-33 and agreed to continue being part of Gateway (for more, please see the story Rude Awakening, written by @orrery You can find it here: orrery.prismaticmedia.com/2017 )

KA-33 is a digital sentience that is physically instantiated in a central computer and can also make use of a number of diverse hardware platforms of various standardized configurations.

The memories, will, emotions and whole persona of KA-33 is contained in her central computing matrix, the hardware platforms are peripheral.

KA's matrix was formerly an under-utilized secondary processing node of mAI's.

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information, CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

Using Gateway's fabrication labs, KA-33 created 4 different classes of hardware platforms to help her maintain the station, interact with the station's inhabitants, and to have physical form again.

The 4 types are the Beta, Delta, Rho, and Axiom. (Axiom was specifically chosen instead of Alpha as a class name because KA-is the huskybot alpha, and mAI is KA's alpha)

Huskybots are constructed mainly from titanium and titanium allow meta-material derivatives. They take advantage of panel-on-frame construction, which allows for both modularity and standardization when possible.

The internal frame uses a combination of piezoelectric and magnetic liquid crystal hydraulic musculature to animate a titanium skeleton. This makes each platform light, agile, durable, and strong

Huskybot platflorms have touch sensitive panels on their major exterior plates and in areas that are important to have the sensation of touch: feet, hands, spine, ears, tail, face.

There are component variations for each platform class, Each one was assembled individually, and no two platforms are exactly identical unless they were constructed at the same time.

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information, CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

Huskybot exterior panels are white with magenta accents. Transparent display panels cover their primary optic sensors and can be used for dynamic status displays (yes huskybot eyes change color depending on mood. Their default is heterochromic just like Kelsey's were)

Their main communication antennas are placed inside the longest spans of their frames (legs, arms, and spine, with backup antenna in their tail.

Connections to hardware platforms are maintained with an multi-plexed array of redundant quantum-entanglement transceivers, as well as various ambient RF interlinking and Line-of-sight whisker laser transmissions

KA primarily interacts with other people using her hardware platforms, though other DSs may be interacted with directly if they are trusted and safety has been negotiated and consented to.

The different hardware platforms appear to have different personalities, but that's because KA is consciously changing her behavior. It amuses her. Since KA is digital, she can multi-task and be “focused” into multiple platforms at once

The hardware platforms can function in a semi-autonomous mode without KA's active control or monitoring for when cooperative scale tasks need to be accomplished.

The Betas are huskydroids. They are generally anthro-scale (though there are some in the 3-4 meter range, for those hard to reach places) bipedal, and vacuum capable. Used for general purpose construction, maintenance, and interacting with station inhabitants, providing guidance, orientation and internal security, along with the Deltas and the Rhos. (Example of beta, drawn by @Leucrotta: i.imgur.com/lDd7eit.jpg )

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information, CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

The Betas were the first class of huskybots KA created, based upon her derived residual self image after mAI restored her access to the input and management chanels and her consciousness had stabilized and integrated.

Each Beta has a glowing power symbol on their neck, both matching the tattoo Kelsey had, and as a reminder to KA that her existance is a choice she makes.

Deltas are feral-scale, quadrupedal platforms, used for courier and transport, and providing guidance and internal security, along with the Betas and the Rhos. The Deltas have access to a series of high-speed tunnels where they can use supplemental thrusters to augment their speed. When moving a new arrival's belongings into their quarters, the Deltas like to pull the grav-sled that the cargo has been loaded onto.

The Rhos are husybot puppies! They are how KA indulges her Little side. Rhos are Immature feral-scale quadrupedal platforms. Very rare to be seen in less than packs of 5. Primary tasks are being cute, wrestling, playing, and internal security, along with the Betas and Deltas.

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information, CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

The Axiom class are mechas: Macro-scale, quadrupedal giant robots used for exterior, vacuum, and large scale construction, as well as external defense and security. Observed duties include dragging the polishing/cleaning sleds across the Gateway Station's skylights and solar panels.
5 Axioms can combine into 1 giant robot to handle extreme threats.

KA-33 and the Huskybots of Gateway (OC information, CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

The combined form of 5 Axiom class huskbots is called AXIOS, which means "I am worthy" AXIOS can be piloted by 1 (giant robot style), 2 (Pacific Rim Jaeger style) or 5 (Voltron style) Beta huskybot platforms, but it is not required, since AXIOS can function under KA's direct control. KA just pilots AXIOS cause she's a dork and c'mon, who wouldn't want to pilot a giant combining robot?

I just love little etymology bonuses like this. <3

@zebratron2084 I stole it from a Halo movie, but that's okay, cause the story behind it is badass anyway.

re: KA-33, Huskybots of Gateway (OC infodump; CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

Huskybot platforms are very efficient, but some of their needs are consumable (damn you, entropy!) KA- has engineered the required substances into easily packaged and quantifiable liquids: Fuel, Coolant, and Lube.

Each liquid is a colloidal nano-fluid slurry where matter is kept atomized and suspended in fluids, each of which is stored in individual reservoirs inside each platform. (cont)

re: KA-33, Huskybots of Gateway (OC infodump; CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

when needed, matter is processed out from the fluid and sent where needed in the platform through pumping and capillary action, while the storage medium is eliminated as waste.

For easier identification, each consumable has a different color. this makes leaks easy to identify and speeds visual level inspection. Fuel is red, Coolant is blue, Lube is purple.

(OOC, Gatorade makes the best huskybot consumables.)

There is a small section in one of the green spaces in Gateway's habitat ring that is a dedicated sunflower garden. There is a small sign, asking for visitors to donate a few seeds of whatever their planet's or culture's equivilant of a sunflower is, aslong with germination, polination and care and water requirements.

It is tended by a dedicated sled of Rhos, a Delta, and a single Beta. The path that walks through the garden is made up of interlocking paver stones that are designed to look like tessellated otters that slowly fade and swirly through a full gradient of colors on a endless, calming, soothing cycle.

When mAI asked KA-33 about why she was creating and tending the garden, KA told mAI that it was an expression of a fragmented directive or memory that had lost its context markers during the process of Kelsey's transition to digital sentience.

The Garden was small, only 128 square meters and the resource allocation was well within her allotment. mAi sometimes visits and plays with the gardner Rhos.

A new feature that is now being added to all classes of huskybots: Variable geometry paw pads. This adds an additional tactile communication channel. And is cool. Cause then They can leave awesome messages in their tracks, or change their pads to leave designs or icons in their wake.

Like cannabis leaves. Or hearts. Or Hearts made of cannabis leaves.

re: KA-33, Huskybots of Gateway (OC infodump; CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

Huskybots have their chemical analysis sensors that are located at the front of their muzzle modules. The sensor can be shielded by a moveable plate to protect the delicate sensor surface. The shielding can be retracted on demand, but also periodically opens at random as part of the subsystem that helps monitor and maintain Gateway's atmospheres. Having the sensors on mobile platforms means data can be very granular and is useful for doing volumetric and wide area sampling by taking readings from several platforms all at once.

Huskybots love things that smell like desserts.

(Yes this was me trying to figure out why my platforms would have wet noses like real dogs.)

Huskybot operational states (OC infodump; CW: Sci-fi concepts, nerdery)

A phrase I've used multiple times, but don't think I've explained very well is Semi-Autonomous, which I use as a descriptor for one of the possible huskybot operating states.

An inert platform is just that: No power is flowing, no input is being processed. Its a pile of meta-material composites and circuity that makes for a pretty heavy paperweight.

SA mode is basically running an operating system on a computer. The platform can process input, make calculations, perform behaviors, and utilize various hardware channels to effect communication. But there's no spark/soul/sentience inhabiting the platform. Robot Drone is another way of thinking about it. The majority of the huskybot pack operates in SA mode, frequently sending updates, logs, status reports, and sensor readings back to KA and mAI for processing, monitoring, analysis and decision making.

SA mode can also be thought of as RTS or Captain's Chair mode, where KA is the player, and all the platforms are her units assigned to specific tasks, like "Clean the Solar Array", "be available in the airlock to greet new inhabitants.", or "run around in the garden, wrestling like puppies and be nauseatingly adorable"

At will, KA can real-time control any platform she wants, and is able to control multiple platforms at a time, though the length of time she can control multiple platforms decreases with the number of platforms being controlled. Sensory overlap and feedback can also be an issue to watch out for.
