re: Commission, Self-Aware Humor, TG Captions (?+?)

@Phorm Oh my god, these are perfect. The moment I realized the captions were bad on purpose... *snerk* These things needed a good loving satire SO BADLY. ^_______^

re: MLP: FiM problematical

@kara_dreamer@plural.cafe @nautilee Yeah. It's amazing how many people are fanatically into both shows yet somehow totally impervious to their themes. -_-

I had such high hopes for both fandoms.

Incidentally, I tend to agree about SU-- but Rebecca didn't have Hasbro to deal with. I've enjoyed all five seasons of Steven, but I do feel like it's gotten sidetracked and lost a lot of plot momentum, even without the terrible scheduling. (And I'm still miffed at how badly Connie's gotten neglected in this allegedly groundbreaking feminist show...) If Lauren had been left alone to make the show she wanted, I think it would've been better than SU, actually.

In fact, I think the moment I fell out of love with bronies was when I realized how PURE AND GOOD Wander Over Yonder is, and that virtually nobody from MLP fandom was going to support Lauren's other work, 'cause It Wasn't Pony. Some cynical part of me suspects it's because Wander ranked very low on the Narcissistic Self-Insertion Opportunity and Tiny Magic Waifu scales. -_-

re: early MLP: FiM problematical; Schadi the changeling still has the mike

@kara_dreamer@plural.cafe Well, you could always do what we're trying to do with our webcomic and split the difference between My Little Pony and a Darren Aronofsky movie... :D

re: early MLP: FiM problematical; Schadi the changeling still has the mike

@kara_dreamer@plural.cafe *approving cackle*

The bronies keep wailing and rending their garments over FiM ending, but I think it'll take us all at LEAST another nine years to compile the full Marxist deconstruction of that show... >:D

This is what the haters don't get. I think part of the appeal of MLP for adults *is* the fact we're watching a kids' show from a grown-up perspective... And there's nothing prurient about that, innately.

It's just really fun to analyze the cognitive dissonance that exists between this somewhat pasteurized world on the screen, and all the subtext that's constantly bleeding out of it... That's an exercise you CAN'T do with a show made purely for adults, and it has its own unique intellectual pleasures.

Tip of the Martian Imperial Crown to @frameacloud for my current display name. ^___^

re: CW: cute cats

@frameacloud @anthracite oh my god i hope you don't mind if i steal that <3 <3 <3

re: early MLP: FiM problematical

@kara_dreamer@plural.cafe Heh. Dragonshy is still deeply problematic to me. So is the Royal Wedding, for that matter. Once you start looking at things from the perspective of the non-Equestrian races, the Goddamn Ponies don't come off so well at all...

re: music; wham city collective

I want SO BADLY for a cuddlecore band, like Bunnygrunt or Go Sailor, to cover this song someday. Or maybe Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Or maybe I'll have to make Peggy break down and buy that guitar she keeps daydreaming about, get a sample pad, and... um... find someone who can fucking sing.

re: music; wham city collective

Speaking of Wham City folk, I'm surprised how much I've been getting into Ed Schrader. (You might know him from the soundtrack of the Adult Swim short "Unedited Footage of a Bear.") This is the screamiest, harshest music I've liked in a long time.

music; wham city collective

Dan Deacon is so criminally underrated. He's always surprising me, too-- his music is usually so frantic, I did not expect the Philip Glassy/Steve Reichy tones in the middle...

re: CW: cute cats

@JulieSqveakaroo @anthracite I was already doing the "Journey pose" at Peggy, like, 10 minutes before I read this toot. I have gotta meet this cat, there's so much she can teach me! 😺

re: lengthy nattering about media subgenres; request for contributions!

@anthracite I have so much of it. :O I should show you Berberian Sound Studio once we're settled-- it's got a lot of gorgeous fake-retro graphic design, a big Saul Bass love letter essentially.

re: lengthy nattering about media subgenres; request for contributions!

@zebratron2084 Visually nigh perfect movies which fall apart due to writing; Mortal Engines, Point Break, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Hellboy the Golden Army

Animated movies which SHOULD have been huge and weren't cause the studio never really hyped them; Iron Giant, Cats Don't Dance, Treasure Planet

dayjob; the most wonderful time of the year! (++)

It's Streetview Hunt 2019! :D

This is the dorkiest thing, and I think it's what pretty much won me over to our Mumbai team. Every year, their leader has put out a 10-item scavenger hunt on Google Maps, and there's a good-natured, zero-consequence competition to find all ten items... for which we get PAID. :D

It's really quite charming. The level of enthusiasm they put into this every year is amazing. They photoshopped a festive flyer, picked a theme, and everything-- this year's is "Hollywood to Bollywood" and it's all film-themed.

Did I mention it pisses me off every single day that I can't hire my friends for this place? Trust me, if that ever changes, I'm gonna pack this place with you folks because I know some of you would absolutely kick ass at this job...

re: lengthy nattering about media subgenres; request for contributions!

VITAL DISCLAIMER: I like the above _genres_. I don't guarantee that any individual _film_ is on the list is any good!

And for the record, I made this disclaimer almost entirely because of The Number 23, which is godawful. :)

lengthy nattering about media subgenres; request for contributions!

Earlier today, I was watching a (surprisingly good) CineFix listicle about the narrator's favorite ridiculously specific film microgenres. So I threw one of my own while I was bored at work, figured I might as well share it.

I'm definitely keen on recommendations for further films that fit these subgenres, and I'm VERY keen to hear about your own favorite tiny, ultra-specific genres of media!
