I'm stressed out about a bunch of things— family health woes, ambiguous looming bureaucracy, a really busy workweek, guilt over snapping at Peg for trying too hard to help with the above, and a weeklong streak of face-kickingly brutal low-self-esteem nightmares — and Tigress Jerk is awful close to the surface today. So I'm mostly laying low.
There's a time and place for that sort of bad behavior, and it's called Reddit. Bast suffers the Pepes to live for a reason—and it's so her angry stripey children have a place to sharpen their claws and make the fun blood stuff go all over like splat. 🐯
@anthracite *waves hand*
She's talking about me folks. :D I had a somewhat difficult Father's Day call to make this morning (my stepbrother is in the hospital, long ongoing story, call and hospital visit went OK) and stressed out at her real bad when she tried to offer advice and distractions.
The good news: I did my penance to her by improvising my own Broadway showtune about my woes. She seemed to approve. I love this dragon. Her whimsy just... kinda takes the edge off everything. 😻😻😻😻
@Aradia (Peggy also needs breakfast, but given her dining habits, she ALWAYS needs breakfast. I think she's about 30 or 40 meals behind. >_< )
@Aradia WHAT?! HOW DARE YOU GENERALIZE YOUR EXPERIENCES LIKE THA...
Huh. I *do* need breakfast. Thank you.
gamer snark
I hesitate to even use the word "fans" at this point, so...
I see the Pokemon consumers are trying to unseat the Game of Thrones consumers from their Most Entitled Franchise Consumer status.
Man, I *must* be turning 45 in a couple weeks, because I read these stories about the National Dex and all I want to do is shake my cane and yell, "Dammit, kids, I told you to GO OUTSIDE!"
@Cerulean Yyyyyup. DeviantArt syndrome. :) That awful conflux of "ultra-specific kink," "painful literal-mindedness," and "utter lack of independent imagination."
I sympathize and am SO AFRAID of what I'm walking into by attempting a space opera that's deliberately full of time gaps and 100% deliberate continuity errors...
I'm HOPING it'll serve as Baby's First Book Of Unreliable Narrative for some of these people, but I think I'm too cynical by now to actually believe it.
@Leucrotta No, no it really isn't :D Paul's Boutique definitely deserves a Most Improved medal. :>
(oh shit, that's right, he's the night in the woods guy—no wonder this is a fraught issue for him, YOU POOR BASTARD, what they must have put you through...)
OH MY GOD. This is my favorite Birdsite thread of the last several years, and captures so many of the elements of modern fandom's literal-mindedness that I can't stand.
I'm very proud of the extent to which Parallax is being written explicitly to frustrate the sort of foolish consistency that Scott's describing here.
extended religious rant, queerpol
This was my response to the All Scripture Baptist Church, whose pastor (who is also, terrifyingly, a Tennessee police detective) recently posted a sermon calling for the execution of homosexuals.
Somewhere, 15-year-old liberal Christian me is very proud of 45-year-old me. I had to dig REAL deep to find him, encourage him it was safe to come out, and let him speak.
He wasn't a bad guy at all, really: his extreme qualms about queerfolk being treated like fair game for hatred was one of the things that drove him first towards liberal Christianity, then to outright heresy, then eventually to... um... worshipping an imaginary jackalope lady.
Sorry about that, kid, I guess we didn't turn out QUITE like you'd hoped, but as you can see, I'm still on a good path and still know my Scripture a hell of a lot better than the people you ran screaming from 30 years ago. :)
art and "interesting times"; mandatory cut for huge :)
@mawr YES <3
I love Kurt Vonnegut, but his quote about art having all the political effect of "custard pie dropped from a stepladder" has always infuriated me... because HIS ART is half the fucking reason I put any effort into developing a leftist ethical system...
It also totally blows my mind when I look at political/satirical media from the 60s–80s and it's ALL THE SAME. It's so comforting to be reminded that they felt just the same way that we do, that the world is breaking and there are devils in charge, and that everything... kinda worked out okay and kinda didn't, and while the stakes may be higher today, otherwise it's all pretty much biz as usual.
re: film, snark, vaguely uspol-adjacent
Debbie Harry, however, is still a remarkably good actress for a LIVING GODDESS, and the only reason it's not agonizing to watch her suffer is that... um... her character seems to love about 70-80% of it.
@Austin_Dern @claude This is something I could see the Euro boardgame crowd doing, honestly...
