cafe, music, precognition

Wow, I'm good. Based entirely on the Eagles, Steely Dan, Elvis Costello, Toto, Paul Simon, and Jackson Browne, I predicted that I'd hear Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out" before I left this cafe.

I was correct.

Not that it's a bad song, really. It just... inhabits a certain atmospheric layer between New Wave and Yacht Rock, and I am a naturalist of such things.

Wow. This is the most annoyingly overproduced business website I have seen... and I do web research in Japan every day.

Proceed at your own risk.

@hummingrain Yeah, she's perfect for the role, too. I didn't even recognize her at first, but I had the same reaction as you when I read the credits. Ernie "Winston Zeddemore" Hudson plays the Corgi King, too! He is also charming as all fuck in this. ^______^

Oh, ultra-brief review, because I don't think I ever talked about it:

Infinity Train. Super-good. Horribly underrated. Brilliant, introspective New Weird fantasy cartoon. Awesome nerdy female S1 protagonist. Sensitive male Disney Princess S2 protagonist. Kate Mulgrew as the Platonically Ideal Cat. Watch it, watch it, watch it.

re: uspol, cafe (++)

I mean, it's very WHITE of me, I suppose, and I suppose I'm pedestalizing them a bit... but even a hard cold logical look at US demographics is telling me these are probably precisely the people who are gonna save our butts, whether or not we've earned it.

Also, now they're talking about reiki, but hey, nobody's perfect. :>

uspol, cafe (++)

Two dark-skinned women discussing literature and pacifist social revolution eight inches away from me.

I think I are in hard platonic love, with them and with this city. I wish there were a polite way to kneel before them and swear them my fealty. 😻😻😻

@Leucrotta This pretty much matches my experiences with techies, yeah. :) I was always kinda bemused by the original anyhow—'cause what the hell are tigers doin' hunting tiny little mice? Moral: just because you're bigger doesn't mean you're smarter. :)

an exhortation (++), cw: chronometric violence

I've noticed a recent trend among my friends: saying fuck it and declaring that 2020 will be good, expowering, and very very queer EVEN IF WE HAVE TO PUNCH IT INTO SUBMISSION.

Yes. Do this. Don't let them define the boundaries of our reality. Do crazy shit. Rock that boat. We are SO FUCKING CLOSE to a paradigm shift.

And that's how this stuff works. The right wing got where they are by pure stubborn denial of any reality but theirs. We can do it too, but smarter and more compassionate. (And with less Russian/corporate funding, but c'est la guerre, sweeties.)

I don't know if I can follow you. I am real fuckin' tired, and if any of you have to stay behind in the infirmary with me because you're real fuckin' tired, you do what you need to and take care of yourself. But if you can infuse yourself with Irrepressible Queer Energy this year and storm the castle... DO IT.

I'll keep grinding away on Parallax. I'm scared it'll be lost in all the chaos—or just ain't that good to start with—but I reallly don't know what else to do at this point. And that's kinda empowering, too. I'm gonna make the weirdest fucking comic I can, and never ever ever apologize for how little the heroes resemble what the rest of the world wants us to be.

I am so disappointed that none of my photos of tonight's full moon came out. I was so looking forward to taunting the canids here with them. Had my earplugs at the ready, my book of $350 fine slips, and everything... =(>).(<)=

Very friendly subtoot:

Just when I'm starting to feel like I'm having a shitty day, someone very dear to me comes along asking for Urgent Spy Jazz Help with their Urgent Spy Jazz Problem and I feel like a very important person again. So flattered that you thought of me, sis. :ms_raccoon:❤️

re: that She-Ra discourse *sigh*; Parallax; birdsite repost

@hystericempress If it's any consolation, the author of that article is getting absolutely pilloried on Twitter and it's only the very worst of the Steely-Eyed And Very Serious Young Queer Cadre that's supporting him. Going after Noelle was NOT a popular move, especially among the She-Ra fanbase...

genuinely uplifting Reddit thread

I needed this a lot. It's nothin' scary—it's literally just a really nice guy from Iran saying he loves Americans and so do most of his friends, and like, half the world saying we love him back. reddit.com/r/pics/comments/elx

Thank you all for the responses on the She-Ra thread. I say this stuff out loud partly because I trust y'all to correct me if I've tilted too far in the opposite direction. <3

Now, more importantly, about this EAT ALL HUMANS holiday Mx. Tiger proposed...

re: that She-Ra discourse *sigh*; Parallax; birdsite repost

@zx3 Funny, I was gonna say that exact thing about Entrapta. ^____^

that She-Ra discourse *sigh*; Parallax; birdsite repost

After this mess— geekdad.com/2020/01/baitworks- —I am now officially terrified that no matter how much effort we put into making Parallax's plot Queer Enough, some eager young activist will find something we simply forgot to do & play it up as if we've attacked the entire LGBT community.

I can see being disappointed your favorite queer ships were never canonized. I can see being wary of mainstream culture making it a bait & switch. I can see lobbying creators politely to start following through better. I CAN'T see demonizing a good ally like
@Gingerhazing [Noelle Stevenson, She-Ra showrunner]

And I really can't see any point in going on this crusade, just because a show that was made to entertain you is imperfect. It seems like a godawful way to show appreciation to a creator, and a vote for "if we can't have it done to our most exact ideological specs, don't do it."

Showrunners give you a gay marriage and you complain it's disempowering. They give you biromance and you complain it's not unsubtle enough. They give an openly NB character and you complain because they work for the "bad guys" in an intentionally morally ambiguous show...

If you look at your culture through an electron microscope, you WILL find imperfection. Everywhere. It's the moral equivalent of being terrified about that 1 insect fragment in every 50 kg of peanut butter. So ask yourselves...

Is it harmful in *practical* terms? Are actual LGBT people going to *hurt* by this? Or is it just not advancing the cause fast enough, with 100% purity? If the only harm it causes is upsetting the crystalline perfection of your fannish imaginative world... my sympathy is limited.

I just... I sympathize with so much of the anger behind this, but I just can't be this militant anymore. Kids, Auntie Rez is exhausted. I've seen far too much assholery and backbiting done under the banner of a "social justice" that can't be bothered to treat people like people.

CW: violence against (big mean) animals, re: history, 🐯, "Hey, We Should Have Eaten That Guy"

Also, note that at least two of those "man-eaters" resorted to preying on humans... because they were severely wounded by humans with guns and could no longer fend for themselves.

What goes around, comes around, Terran motherfuckers. 😾

Fuck it. By formal Martian Imperial Proclamation, I'm declaring April 19, the anniversary of this death, to be Bitey Saints Day.

We will celebrate the lives of St. Champawat, St. Thak the Man-Eater, and the Saints of Chowgarh.

There will be steak and jingly things and great big cardboard boxes. All are invited. ESPECIALLY the humans. BYOBBQsauce. 😼
