re: USPol, Gender (--) (Trying not to crater, promise)

@Phorm @troodon @001zlnv I'm pulling a lot of comfort out of historical and cultural precedent here, too. Again, there's that whole "think of them as a bunch of trolls" argument-- and we sure won against our trolls by being cuter and nicer in the long run. :D America ALREADY had its cultural/media shift towards accepting transgender people.

re: Uspol-adjacent

@hummingrain *hug* Don't forget, intimidation is an explicit part of their strategy. How many times have we watched Trump puff up, hoping to scare American liberals away from a fight that he can't actually win?

Brother, remember this stubby-fingered son of a bitch can't even get his wall built-- something that was supposedly central to his "beliefs."

He's gotten his base support out of this already. It would be VERY Trump to fold & change the subject once there's pushback.

re: USPol, Gender (--) (Trying not to crater, promise)

@Phorm @001zlnv I mean, this is definitely true. He's more than happy to explain this issue for attention and base-support, and sadly, it generally works.

What really frustrates me is the increasing feeling this is all largely just to give all the anti-gay-marriage advocates a reason to keep existing, by finding a new progressive issue to harp on. Exploiting prejudice is always good for quick political points-- and membership dues. >_<

re: USPol, Gender (--) (Trying not to crater, promise)

@Phorm @001zlnv Additionally (and sorry to catpile here, hun, I'm really just trying to help, I swear)... how sincere is Trump about this, probably? And how much is just him trying to pander to his base and distract us from his failures -- AGAIN -- by poking at a wedge issue.

SOB can't even get his wall built, so I'm skeptical about his ability to do anything about this on anything but the PR scale. If he does... the REAL fight only begins.

re: USPol, Gender (--) (Trying not to crater, promise)

@Phorm @001zlnv So I'm resolutely not willing to panic yet. Trump does NOT have a great history of getting people on his side for these things. Kavanaugh on the Supreme is a worrisome factor, yes, but one of these cases would actually have to GET that far first, and at the speed these things progress, The Orange Nightmare could be long gone before he gets his way...

re: USPol, Gender (--) (Trying not to crater, promise)

@Phorm @001zlnv

The courts.

For instance: "On March 23, 2018, President Trump banned transgender and transsexual people with current or previous gender dysphoria from serving in the U.S. military. However, the Pentagon said they would comply with the court decision until it is reversed." -- Wikipedia

NTM only ONE bathroom bill, North Carolina's Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, was passed... and it was later repealed.

@CeruleanK @imetagon@dragon.style Honestly, I was originally more interested in the "observation" about Flurry Heart, but... yeah, Cadance's name has always been pretty serious WTF material too.

Still embarrassed over my facial recognition failure earlier! Peg will basically vouch for me: my brain doesn't actually have a graphics card installed. It's strict VT100 in here. n_____n;;

So who did I see at Morsel in the UD a few minutes ago, and can you ever forgive me for my pitiful inability to remember faces? ^__^;;

Fuuuuuck, that documentary went to some places. Hope I got the content warnings up in time for everyone! Still glad I watched it, but as the host says: it's definitely a history show, not a nostalgia show. That was a lot heavier than I expected.

cw: child abuse in YCDTOTV documentary; also spoilers

The whole thread about the child exploitation aspect of the whole production really unnerved me... because years ago I watched a Tomorrow People DVD by the same producer, Roger Price... and Rik, Peg, and I were making jokes all the way through about how much he liked putting young boys in their skivvies. We honestly thought we were just being snarky about an old Brit's naivete. It's not nearly as funny after watching this documentary. -__-

Surprisingly deep and insightful documentary about You Can't Do That On Television:

[Major content warnings. The host goes into some very dark aspects of the show's production. The first half is a lot of fun, though.]

@kaputotter I'm only about an hour into it, and be aware there are some serious content warnings about 45 minutes to an hour in. They go into some very dark aspects of the show's production. The host's opinions about it are pretty damn worthwhile so far, though.

re: mood (~); mortality; mild medical TMI

So, yeah. Knowing him, he'd probably had chest pains all fucking day and was just too much of a Big Manly Paisan to tell anybody.

We also found stray french fries in his car, and a bunch of sub shop wrappers in the trunk after he died. Son of a bitch was sneaking food, blatantly against his cardio diet. :p

Love you, Dad, but I'm not half as fucking cavalier as you were. I'll probably get a warning shot from the Reaper, too-- and I'll actually listen.

mood (~); mortality; mild medical TMI

On the other hand, the fear of dying on the people I love is still there in the background. It's okay, it's been there since I was 12 and lost my dad.

Sometimes I still really worry I'm gonna follow the same path. Tonight, I wondered if he went suddenly without warning, or had some inkling something was wrong.

Then I remembered he was the same stubborn dipshit who wouldn't TELL US that he was peeing blood during a vacation until we were halfway back home...

mood (+++); minor uspol-adjacent

Okay, dancing to the entire Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome album, then petting Peggy for 20 minutes, was SUPER life-affirming.

So is thinking of how many of my political enemies didn't get petted today, haven't gotten petted before, and never will get properly petted. :D
