mh (++?!)

Just sat here looking at that recent pic of Sugar, Snow, and Liv standing on an LGBT flag and had this weird wave of satisfaction at how we're all living our lives.

I didn't have nearly the impact on furry fandom, let alone the world, that I hoped I would. But I was and still am a footsoldier in the war to keep our culture weird, humane, and otherworldly and I'm just so proud of how well it's all worked.

Now that there's a glimmer of hope we're gonna win the political struggle, maybe I'm finally able to appreciate the cultural struggle, and all the beautifully strange things we've all made in this ugly ugly world.

I spend my day with coyotes and genies and balloon people and robots. I could not be happier about this, especially given I could have very easily wound up an accountant or something -- some poor bastard with one name and one identity, Mark Zuckerberg's perfect consumer done.

But nope, I'm a giant fucking cat from Mars and it's a good day to roar extra loud.

Sugarfoot is adjusting relatively well to the kittens having moved on. She's patroled the apartment a couple of times and made a few sad mews, but has taken consolatory pettings relatively well and is about to have a snooze on the arm of the couch. I keep telling her she did a great job as mama and should be nothing but proud -- 'cause she did and she should.

re: drama (but not that kind), comedy

Apparently these plays are deliberately loaded with internal inconsistencies and irreconcilable statements and you have to carefully compare dialogue from scene to scene to catch it all. I think I am in love.

drama (but not that kind), comedy

I'm watching an old BBC adaptation of Harold Pinter's "The Birthday Party." It's my first Pinter play, and though I was already familiar with him and what he meant, it's really stark now that like 90% of my favorite comedy is descended directly from this "comedy of menace." I love dystopias and paranoid conspiracies and existential breakdowns and whatnot. Wham City stole their whole shtick from this guy -- hell, so did David Lynch -- and I wish I knew who else does so I can give them my money.

Limbo spoiler

@hystericempress I thought it was admirably bold of them to have that ultra-abrupt and fraught ending. I can see how some people could be very fulfilled by a game like this. Personally, I... it just gave me Seattle-climate flashbacks. No thanks. ;)

@hystericempress I'm all of 30 seconds into a playthrough and I'm already getting terminal Lonely Death of Got-No-Legs Boy vibes out of it...

@chimerror haha, the moment i saw your previous tweet my first thought was "wow, first nancy and now this"

i love new nancy

@hystericempress Good answers, thanks sis! If you don't mind another round of questions... Can you give me an example of a game that *really* failed horribly at this? I think I'm starting to imagine what you mean but I'd love to see an exaggeratedly bad example to really clarify, also because i'm stoned and bored :)

@hystericempress This is a really interesting distinction, though. Do you mind taking a moment to detail what separates the two? Is it, like, the arbitrariness of a badly written tragedy, the sense that the universe is just too absurdly cruel to take seriously and it keeps you from commtting to characters and their fates? 'Cause I do get that a lot, and it does really keep me from bonding with a work...

(She says as she watches a Pinter play tho'...)

re: kitten graduation day (~)

@JulieSqveakaroo They spent a LOT of their naptimes with all three curled up in there, especially on the nights when it was a bit tough to heat the house. It was a big relief that they had that to snuggle up in and yeah, I think it's been pretty well claimed as theirs. I think it made their last couple weeks here *dramatically* cozier. :)

re: kitten graduation day (~)

@JulieSqveakaroo And I suspect the kittens should handle it pretty well, too. Kim (our neighbor) seemed very confident that he knew how to deal with kitten habits and was prepped for it. We also dropped them off with favorite toys, familiar food, and a few things that smell like them and mama both.

I hope it's OK that we gave away the cat bed you sent -- Liv and Snow adore it and I couldn't imagine not letting them keep it. It was the #1 comfort I could think of for them, full of warm memories of snuggling mom. Thank you so much for it, it really gave them a lot of comfort in their last weeks here and will hopefully do so down the street for many more years to come. <3

re: kitten graduation day (~)

@JulieSqveakaroo I'm still really glad she got the closure, but so far any feline existential crisis has been postponed for nap and scritch. :) Yeah, I think she was good and ready.

re: kitten graduation day (~)

@Austin_Dern Thank you! Yeah, I'm proud and honored that Bast chose us to help the little guys get a good start in life. Sugarfoot's been a pretty good mama and done so much of the work for us, though!

re: kitten graduation day (~)

Went well. Neighbor sure seems like he couldn't be nicer, and he had Opinions about whether they should be indoor or outdoor cats which shows a very promising concern. He is definitely an experienced cat owner, was already ready with a litterbox and cat tree and whatnot, and was fine with arranging visits and such. I feel real good about this.

Still kinda feel like I betrayed Sugarfoot. At least she tagged along to observe the handoff, so she probably has some idea what happened. She's gonna be weird for a few days, I am sure.

kitten graduation day (~)

Gearing up to take the kittens to our neighbor's place. Mixed feelings, as you can imagine, but god is this easier than shipping them halfway across the city to be with a total stranger.

@KinkyTurtle Aujourd'hui, Scooby Doo rencontre la star invitée spéciale Julia Kristeva.

re: kittens (++ but bittersweet)

@zx3 I mean, this is BY FAR the optimal result we're getting. Going off to a total stranger's house via an adoption charity would have been like sending them to another dimension. This is more like sending them to the local Y for Kitten Space Camp*. :)

*i.e., a space camp for kittens, not a camp for the exploration of kittenspace, although now that I think of it, it is probably also that

re: kittens (++ but bittersweet)

(Oh, by "leave for good" I mean tomorrow afternoon, assuming their new parent is going to be around! The hand-off is not tonight. I get to say a more extended goodbye tomorrow.)
