re: chemistry, psa, annoyance

This fucker.

I'm looking for the "SLAP USER" button on my keyboard.

Wikipedia ONLY mentions "dihydrogen monoxide" as a parody. It says NOTHING about it being valid. I even went back and checked the version that was current the day they posted. Couldn't have been clearer it was satire. Bet they didn't even look at the actual article first. They just Knew A Fact and linked to the Fact Place.

This may seem trivial to you, friends, but the phenomenon it represents? It's the Root Of All Stupid and it's reason #1 after good old-fashioned greed that we can't have nice things.

re: chemistry, psa, annoyance

@Austin_Dern What really burns me is the process we're talking about here:

1) Person makes a joke.
2) Entire Internet swarms on it as an excuse to be smug, because they can use it to prove other people wrong.
3) Entire Internet takes a factoid from the joke, gets it wrong, and repeats it all over-- with EQUAL smugness.

It's that ironic tension between mocking other people's ignorance and nestling in harder with one's own. I HATE it. I suspect I've done it too, and that makes me hate it even more. >_<

It's like, "You JUST got done making fun of someone else for uncritically believing something they saw on the Internet. D'ya think MAYBE you can polish up your own process a little next?"

re: chemistry, psa, annoyance

(OK, a few sources are pointing out that TECHNICALLY MAYBE you could call it dihydrogen monoxide-- but chemists just *don't* because it doesn't represent the actual chemistry very well at all. The best I'm seeing for an official IUPAC name is "oxidane," which is fascinating...)

chemistry, psa, annoyance

This is today's friendly reminder to the entire world that IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT GOOGLE RESULTS TELL YOU, "DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE" IS NOT VALID NOMENCLATURE FOR WATER/H₂O, FOR THE SAME GODDAMN REASON WE DON'T CALL SULFURIC ACID "DIHYDROGEN MONOSULFUROUS TETROXIDE" OR SOME SHIT.

GOOGLE IS NOT AN ENCYCLOPEDIA, IT IS A STRAW POLL OF UNEDUCATED PEOPLE. If half the fucking population of Earth is convinced water is "dihydrogen monoxide" because of a piece of satire, it will tell you "water is called dihydrogen monoxide" and it will do it with a confident friendly smile.

@porsupah What IS this reality? We definitely need to redouble our efforts to get in contact with the producer and ask for a script doctor. We jumped the shark yet again.

cafe music; implicit aging :)

Siouxie, B-52s, Violent Femmes, Blondie, and fucking PYLON, right in a row?!?!

Yeah. This place gets me.

Came across this screenshot and it couldn't define my current mood about the world any better.

Yeah, um. I'm the one on the left, in case there was ever any doubt.

re: shameful mst3k s13 confession

@001zlnv I mean, Patton has proven himself many times over... But yeah, he just doesn't seem at home in this role.

shameful mst3k s13 confession

I've really tried, but Kinga, Max, and Synthia just aren't makin' it for me.

At the very least, I'm probably gonna continue my habit of skipping the host segments when I watch these.

I really do miss Joel. I would do anything to have one of them make a reference to Shake-A-Pudding or Marx Toys right now.

psychology, social media

On Birdsite, I'm three days into a seven-day sentence for telling a Russian official I hope he gets a social disease. :> I am reminded of this every time I reflexively do so much as fave something over there.

But I'm very annoyed and disturbed to find that, now, every time I go to click something OVER HERE ON MASTO, I can feel my brain pitching a momentary guilt response, as if I'm about to do something I'm gonna get punished or rejected for.

I hate corporate social media with such a thorough and bleak passion right now. I feel sick in my heart every single day about the world it's created and all the subtle things it does to stifle our spirits.

Loving the email address I was given for chasing up my hair removal referral belongs to, per their autoreply, "LASERHAIR". ^_^

When I get to choose my cybernetic body, you'd better bet that's an option I'm going for. :heart_cybre:

@001zlnv I feel it's got some MAJOR timing and balance issues, but it's still insanely fun, innit!

@hystericempress No, yeah, this is EXACTLY what happened to me. Like, we've probably talked about how all the hypnosis stuff came STRAIGHT out of unprocessed separation anxiety and recurring nightmares about not being able to get at the "real" personalities of family members who had been Touched By Something Strange... I think that was my first flash on just how fucked up and fragile human identities were and it... yeah, you're you, you can fill in the rest.

this happens more often than I think people realize, too. sometimes you realize that, pearl-like, some aspect of your selfhood has coalesced around an undigestible chunk of thought it just can't get rid of or deal with in any other way. and now it's something beautiful to you

@JulieSqveakaroo @001zlnv I had SO MANY weird little tics like that too! (Had... heh.... yeah. *looks out window, blows, and counts to three*)

re: what the fuck is that crazy tiger talking about (re: current mood; cw: horror movie quote, reality damage)

@DifficultToTame Honestly? I focus on the negative here, and yeah I HAVE been mightily stressed over our still-unresolved Attic Cat Situation, but...

We're OK. :D I'm missing my old life in Seattle with a huge queer furry community something fierce, even if I feel like I was always kept at arms' length from it. But my finances are brighter than they've ever been, we have a safe and repeatable short-term Cat Rescue method for now, turns out I DID NOT HAVE COVID...

So really? The support and empathy delight me ( <3 ) but the fact I can even HAVE existental ennui is probably a sign that I'm far enough up the Hierarchy of Needs to be more or less all right. ;)

re: Out of Time, Brain Dump, mh (-)

@Phorm The short version of my observation: while the illusion that the Cool People have Cool Lives all the time can be agonizingly strong, in my experience from the brief time I was even debatably a Cool Person I came to realize...

The actual Cool Moments come in bursts. Even if someone is Cool their whole life, the actual amount of time they spend doing Cool Things amounts to maybe a fortieth of their waking hours.

In other words, someone could *conceivably* have one Very Cool Year and have done as much Cool Stuff as anyone else. <3
