Today's Gender of the Day is: tuned percussion instrument #genderoftheday
In all seriousness though, if a transphobe can read a Gender of the Day post and think I'm on their team, is this... really a good thing for me to be doing?
It's an easy joke to misread without context.
@starkatt things I've been silently thinking about for a while now
@Oneironott What do you think?
@starkatt i think it's a good way of ruining the joke for those who would use it negatively, if indeed it sticks like that. From their side it reminds me of ugly "attack helicopter" jokes, but the response comes across to me like a positive "so what there are countless ways to be"
@starkatt but i see where lack of context yields problems. Similarly, perhaps, with the "ahh the # genders jokes"
@starkatt Most things can be misread without context to mean pretty much whatever the reader thinks it ought to. Don't let that stop you! 😸
@ElectricKeet I think it's important to keep in mind that the target audience and the total audience can be different, though. A post being read in a way other than what was intended doesn't mean I'm absolved from consequences of that reading.
@starkatt @ElectricKeet No, but you're also not obligated to own every reading of your text, either. There's a pretty big gap between "it's easy to read that into this" and "you had to bring a ton of your own context with you to get that interpretation."
@literorrery @ElectricKeet Sure. But for the Genderoftheday posts, it *is* pretty easy to arrive at an unintended reading from outside of the intended audience/context.
@starkatt @ElectricKeet Maybe so. At the same time, it's hard for me to not think somebody who makes that reading is doing so deliberately. That may be because I'm an insider looking at it. All I can really suggest is asking cis and straight allies what they think.
Ah, okay. I figured out what went wrong here.
I set the post to Public, not thinking about how that it would mean it spreading off of my instance and into other spaces that lack the cultural context.
...So they'll be unlisted in the future.
