oh yeah @typhlosion you're learning japanese, can you explain this thing?
@Felthry can you give an example?
@typhlosion there's an event in the game i'm playing a translation hack of titled "追求 ~風見を逮捕できない理由~"
@typhlosion but we also see it in music a lot, like on the Tales of the Abyss soundtrack there's a track called "A Song ~Song By Tear~"
@Felthry @typhlosion sounds like a subtitle, like English language songs would have in brackets, e.g. "Breathe (In the Air)" or "Helena (So Long & Goodnight)"
@noiob @typhlosion okay I agree with you but your use of the word brackets to mean parentheses is bugging me |3
@Felthry @typhlosion I'm ESL and a parenthesis is a bracket
@noiob @typhlosion to us, it's (parentheses) [brackets] and {braces}
@Felthry @typhlosion Wikipedia says it's an American thing to consider parentheses and brackets a separate thing, and I technically learnt Oxford English in school
@noiob @typhlosion Is it really? We had no idea.
@typhlosion @noiob I guess there's also ⟨angle brackets⟩ but despite having "brackets" in the name we don't consider them a "type" of bracket either
@typhlosion @noiob no we think they're in the same class too, it's just that "brackets" has a specific meaning of [these things] and that class of punctuation doesn't have any name that we know of
{these} are braces, which are also not a "type" of bracket, because brackets are [this] and only [this]
