@cadxdr@weirder.earth Someone else pointed out the rareness of /bt/ yesterday and it made me realize that it'd probably either morph over time to either pt or bd, with the same voicedness for both consonants (probably bd because that one doesn't break the still-productive "sub" morpheme)

but adding some form of epenthesis probably would also work, which seems to be what happened

@packbat actually if you read the etymology it may be older, it cites a modern latin variation "substrahere" of the standard "subtrahere"

re: PMD Explorers of Time postgame

@socks one of the best tracks in the game is only played in a single postgame dungeon that you can't go back to

i think that one might only be in sky, though

you know you enjoy what you do for work when you find yourself thinking about it on your day off

i kinda want to make a synchronous motor spice model, the only motor model we can find from someone else is an induction motor

there's something we just kinda appreciate about how titanium nitride spells out TiN, like the metal

the fact that the irrational number that's the hardest to approximate by rational numbers is algebraic (it's (1+√5)/2) feels kind of weird, but also as you think about it it's just "well of course it would be", but then think a little more and it feels weird again

@Trinket excellent, yes

with linoone's weird quirks i expect they'd have trouble maneuvering in tight spaces

i think about xkcd.com/1322/ a lot

the label does not define the thing

@ziphi Perhaps the transition isn't going in the right direction then?

i am curious, does anyone with some knowledge of linguistics know why it is that people with certain accents tend to put an epenthetic /s/ in the middle of the word "subtract", turning it into "substract"?

We've even seen this is writing

@rey there aren't any letters skipped between the e and the t, so it would be i'ven't

@bj we've been told one of the lufia games has a side dungeon that works like that

@00dani greek has (or at least ancient greek had, we don't know modern greek in the slightest) several weird consonant clusters like that, like μν (mn, as in mnemonic or amnesia) and φθ (phth, as in phthalate and naphtha)

you learn to pronounce phth if you do any amount of chemistry (it shows up a lot in there) but mn is just usually approximated as /n/
