@cadxdr@weirder.earth (also also if you want any help with understanding anything, we'd be happy to help--we may not be too big on arduino specifically but we know a lot about electrical engineering seeing as it's what we do as a job. and i like helping people!)

@cadxdr@weirder.earth (also the last time we did anything with an arduino was like ten years ago so there are probably newer boards by now, but the uno and the mega2560 are what we know)
-F

@cadxdr@weirder.earth the only thing I'd worry about is if you were going for an arduino uno or mega2560 or something and you got a clone that had the connectors slightly in the wrong places, so you couldn't properly use the "shield" boards designed to go on top of it, or just poor quality connectors that don't make good contact or something--but it would be trivial to replace them even if you have no experience soldering and only have a $5 hardware-store soldering iron
-F

@cadxdr@weirder.earth yeah, you can even download the schematics and build one on a breadboard if you really want! (all the essential components for an arduino uno come in through-hole packages with .1" pin spacing, though you don't get USB with that)

Some of the third-party ones may have some modifications to the circuit, but all in all it's a very simple circuit--with the exception of the USB to serial stuff it's not far off the bare datasheet recommendations for the ATmega328P
-F

@cadxdr@weirder.earth Also, I forget who makes it (Digilent maybe?), but there's also at least one arduino clone out there that costs more, but is ruggedized with extra protection on everything so that you can't really break it unless you're actually trying to break it. Since it costs more, it's not what you want now, but it might be good for if you figure out you definitely want to do stuff with it, but you aren't confident enough yet that you won't break it.
-F

@cadxdr@weirder.earth It's worth noting that, since Arduino is open-source hardware, the board files and schematics are freely available, so many of the clones are actually electrically identical to the original, just with some different logos on the silkscreen and stuff. In general they should be about the same as an official one and will work with all the official arduino software and stuff.

we might have to just figure out how to use this simplis simulator that maxim made their models for

annoying thing: Analog sure isn't in a hurry to get LTspice models of Maxim parts

that was the one thing we thought might be an upside to the acquisition last year, might get better simulatable models of Maxim parts
-F

@starfall oh! we always just kinda thought people did that because it was how they always did it

it never made sense to us because it's a lot harder to park that way, and we have very little interest in cars beyond being efficient and getting us from place to place

hot take

mangoes are overrated

guava is a much superior tropical fruit

re: vegan food cooking, positive (non-vegan food in background)

@packbat sure--no need to watch it now, or at all! might be a helpful thing at some point though, or at least interesting

the presenter even bakes a loaf with no yeast at all, and it turns out predictably awful because the rest of the recipe isn't meant to be an unleavened bread, but it's neat to see the result anyway

re: vegan food cooking, positive (non-vegan food in background)

@packbat bread is really cool, there's a lot of things you can do with it to experiment and have it still come out pretty good! there's also a lot you can do and have it come out bad, but then you've learned something and the ingredients aren't terribly expensive

have you seen youtube.com/watch?v=FJxJhbCFsc by the way? some interesting bits of food science about what happens from using different amounts of different ingredients in bread (specifically pizza crust, but it'll generalize to other breads too)

@JulieSqveakaroo i don't know *why* but when we read "old card games" the first thing that came to mind was like, hucards (the card-like cartridge format used by the pc-engine)

@felixphew Pronouncing it with an /æ/ sounds weird to me! it doesn't feel possible to put an /ɹ/ after an /æ/

but that's just going to be our dialect i'm sure
-F

@noiob we also need to get around to doing it, which is sometimes Hard

maybe we'll go do it tomorrow, it's too late tonight
-F

@noiob no we do (fedex office is one of them, fedex mostly does shipping but they also bought a print shop chain a while ago)

but we don't know anything about like, what size to get it printed or what paper to use or anything

and we've heard stuff about needing it to be in a printable color space or something??? i don't know if that's something you need to worry about for one-offs
