@websterleone yeah they're some kind of snubber, but you need to get the order of magnitude right for a snubber even if the precise value doesn't matter that much

re: disc horse

@rey what kind of disc is it though

is it a cd-v, a cvd, an sacd, or an hvd (obviously these are the only types of disc that would be included iin something like this)
-F

@websterleone they shouldn't be critical but i'd need to examine the circuit (can you trace out a schematic? any idea on the part numbers of stuff?) to get any real idea of what the right order of magnitude would be
-F

@relee It is mostly straight corridors, and that is a point against it, but there's a case to be made that that argument is a cover for why they really were so vehemently against it.

Final Fantasy X was also mostly straight corridors, and it got some backlash for it, but nowhere near as much as XIII did. And it's a beloved classic of the series now.

@hi_cial learning about just how unreliable the usual methods of determining the sex of a skeleton are really made us side-eye a lot of those random facts we've learned about archaeology and ancient history
-F

@hi_cial i'm also amazed at that, since it sounds like you didn't have to charge it
-F

@hi_cial that's fair! it's a good idea to charge handheld systems like that every once in a while (six months to a year) though, even when not in use. stops the battery from dying completely (li-ion batteries that drain too low permanently lose capacity)
-F

@hi_cial the solar sensor doesn't need battery power though, it doesn't need to be powered when the game isn't in the console, and the gba itself provides the power when it is connected
-F

@hi_cial i am surprised it would have trouble loading saves; if you make a new save does it work? It's possible that the save just got corrupted over time (flash memory *can* lose data, it just takes a lot longer usually)
-F

@hi_cial oh! yeah boktai also uses a real-time clock, i forgot about that. it uses it to keep track of when sunrise and sunset are
-F

@hi_cial flash memory (or at least the related technology called EEPROM) existed in the 90s and could have been used for gameboy and snes games, but it was just much too expensive for mass produced stuff like that, it would have made each game cost like $10-$20 more
-F

@hi_cial gba games, except for a *very* few early ones like Fire Emblem, use non-volatile flash memory for save data! So they don't need a battery any more than your usb flash drive needs a battery

except pokemon rse, which have a battery for timekeeping because they also have a real time clock (but if it dies they don't lose the save, time-based things like berries growing and espeon/umbreon evolutions just don't happen)
-F

@hi_cial if it increases the sell value by more than it costs, you might be able to get the battery replaced at a batteries+, i'm pretty sure they do that kind of work
-F

@hi_cial it's quite possible that the battery is just strong enough that enough of the save data survives for the game to see that there is data there and gives you the continue option, but once it tries to read the whole save file it gets a bunch of nonsense, error detection kicks in, and it says you have a corrupted save
-F

@hi_cial yeah if it says corrupted save it's the battery

not surprising; pokemon gsc drained batteries fast because the real-time clock consumes additional power on top of the tiny amount the sram needs, while other games just had to keep the sram powered

so the battery in a pokemon gen 2 cart usually lasts around 5ish years, while other gb/gbc games could last around 10-15 years
-F

@hi_cial when you pick continue, does the save actually load? or does it come up with some kind of corrupted save message?
-F

@hi_cial could be. that's a strange combination of things to happen though.

there are other ways to mess up the time though--there's even a key combination you can do to un-set the time so you can change it
