we've been looking at stuff @ca_dmv_bot posts and honestly surprised the california DMV recognised 14 and 88 as nazi symbols as far back as 2015. it seems like that didn't come into the spotlight until more recently than that.

some of their other rules appear to be kind of strange though. why do they not allow area codes on license plates?

we've also a bit surprised that the numbers 13 and 50 seem to be mentioned a lot too. apparently 13 is a gang reference and 50 is a police reference, which aren't allowed?

@owashii@plush.city we have a coworker who's like 40ish (so has probably been using computers a significant portion of his life) and does that and i'm not sure why

he's also French so maybe he never got used to the US keyboard layout though?

@bj it has so many different scripts and yet there doesn't seem to be anything about including arabic or any of the brahmic scripts... it should do arabic and devenagari at least

feels a bit odd that they'd include stuff like D'ni and Tengwar and Klingon before actual scripts used in the real world

@oceanotter yeah generally a good idea to recap it while you have it open. those caps don't cost much and it's far more effort to open the thing back up when it starts to really fail than it is to just replace them while it's open anyway

if you make sure you discharge the picture tube you should be fine, that's the only thing that carries a dangerous amount of charge (you might get a zap off of some power supply capacitors but nothing dangerous, just startling)

@rey can't remember it, all we can remember is that it was based on cramming more than two layers into a stndard dvd along with some new compression technique to get hd video onto dvds

they made some claims about eventually making 100-layer dvds

the only thing that ever came out on the format, i believe, was a bunch of episodes of lazytown

@websterleone by "shouldn't be critical" i meant the exact value shouldn't be critical; they are most likely necessary for reliable operation
