dear cis queer folk

If your queer media doesn't include trans themes,

Just say,

'Oh fuck, I totally didn't think to include trans people. I guess my friend circle is very cis and I just fell victim to my own cis centric biases. I will remedy this in the future.'

Instead of saying,

'What, no, I'm super trans friendly. Look, in that background of this scene, this masculine cis girl could be construed as a trans man. Look how friendly to the trans community I am.'

ukpol, voting

If you are in the UK and eligible to vote please make sure you are registered! If you know others who might not have registered (just moved house, just got old enough to vote etc) please remind them, and help them register if necessary.

Deadline is tomorrow for council elections, and 7th May for EU elections. And of course given the current political situation we might have a general election, too...

Everyone's sharing the close-up image of the black hole itself, which is neat, but here is a zoomed-out view of the gigantic mass of space-stuff that it is busily consuming: chandra.harvard.edu/blog/node/

Why is "bananas" ("he's gone bananas!") the colloquialism for "out of control"? bananas are not that weird or out of control a fruit.

Now, durians, those are out of control

one of these days we really do need to write that linguistic analysis of circuit schematics..

the only real downside is that Haber's name is stuck to it. and Haber was not what you would call a good person

One of the best things is that, though Fritz Haber designed the process intending to use it to create chemical weapons to harm people, the Haber process is now indispensable to producing fertilizer, and without it the world would not be able to support anywhere near the current world population

I like taking things designed for awful purposes and repurposing them for good

We did a politiscales thingy

politiscales.net/en_US/results if you want to see for some reason! This mostly aligns with expectations, no real surprises here. There were a few questions I didn't know how to answer though

Honestly, people are taught about the benefits of communism from a young age--who hasn't been told about the virtues of sharing? I wonder why it's such a divisive topic among adults.

re: FFVI spoilers

there are a lot of little touches in the FFVI that make it really my favorite of the series. you play through it but then there's still so much more nuance you can go back and find

It's possible, easy even, to completely misunderstand the dynamic between Edgar and Sabin and especially the significance of Edgar apparently randomly having a double-headed coin to trick Setzer with

FFVI spoilers

Something I really like about final fantasy vi is how the ending theme ties together Locke and Celes's themes

Combining that with how Locke and Celes seem to be getting a romantic Thing for one another in the story

was the amino acid threonine named by someone who just really liked the number 309?

why are nylon standoffs so fun to fidget with
