another good word: nonmonotonic

it is officially The Worst Word to type on a flip phone, since it has seven contiguous letters on the same key (and then another set of two contiguous letters on that same key again, but with a t in between)

I don't know why I just like the word electrophoresis a lot

Bauxite!
Electrophoresis!
Zenzizenzic!

They're good words.

it occurs to me that wear levelling would be Weird on f-ram based drives

because unlike flash, where reading the memory is basically free, f-ram has destructive reads, meaning after every read the data has to be written back

Villager 1: "Wait, yesterday Johnny was tripping over his own feet and today he's fighting off bandits like he's been doing it his whole life. Must have been holding out on us."

Villager 2: "Yeah, and I guess he just inherited a bunch of armor and weapons? Just showed up at his house today. Some kids have all the luck."

Villager 3: "Nah, I've seen this before. It's not luck. It's a new game plus."

(h/t @KelethDragon for setting me on this train of thought)

i wonder if it would be possible to hack the appropriate connectors onto an rtx 2080 to actually use it in CGA graphics mode

because afawk CGA emulation is still required by the relevant standards, by a technicality of requiring a VGA mode and VGA's requirement of compatibility with EGA and EGA's requirement of compatibility with CGA

explaining the joke

red book CDs are audio CDs, named after the color of the book that defined the standard

green book CDs are CDis, such as those used in the infamous Philips CDi game console with its meme-generating bad animation and voice acting

Show thread

red book CDs? no, we've got _green_ book CDs. they have 90% more abysmal voice acting and 140% more amateurish animation!

This is your occasional reminder that until 1993 the existence of Post Office Tower in London was an official state secret

Despite it being 177 metres tall, in central London, and having both a revolving restaurant and a gift shop

I will never get over how a laserdisc drive spinning up sounds like a jet engine

we get paid tomorrow. this is good. we have nothing but water to drink in the apartment right now and not enough money on hand to make it worth going to the grocery store yet.

the silhouette similarity fucks me up

"demoscene" looks like an ancient greek person's name

Demoscenes, the great programmer-philosopher

it's so weird to me that one of the biggest names in early home computers, Tandy, was a _leatherworking_ company before they got into doing computers

Meta, CW ask, climate, neg

While we're on the subject of CW asks, can people please be CWing any sort of climate change, resource scarcity, extinction, and miscellaneous we're-all-gonna-die posting?

I cannot properly express how debilitating I find those posts. I've lost whole days to anxiety attacks about this stuff, and they are the primary cause of my block and mute lists.

"CW: Climate".

That's all you gotta type. Please.

Alpacas are basically just giraffe sheep.

Please boost.
Please share.
We're almost halfway there.

Otherwise,
we have to choose
between repairs and survival essentials.

ffix spoilers

Eternally frustrated that Beatrix, a vastly more interesting character, doesn't become a permanent party member and is only in your party for like two fights

I guess they thought that two knights would be too much, and didn't want to drop Steiner, which, okay, yeah, Steiner is one of the better characters, but surely they could have made Beatrix more of a spellblade or paladin archetype (she even has paladin-like healing magic)

It's not like they don't already have two combo white-mage/summoners with dagger and eiko, anyway

Show thread

I guess ffix's enigmetic character is Amarant, but no one ever remembers Amarant. He's not really a particularly well-written or fleshed out character.

Show thread

some final fantasy games have enigmatic characters who join the party for their own poorly-explained or unexplained reasons. Like Gogo or Vincent.

Final Fantasy IX, on the other hand, has Quina. Quina wants to eat new things. Quina does not want anything other than to eat new things. And frogs. Quina's motivations are not at all hidden or absent. They're just _weird_. Much like Quina themself.
