there should be more stories that are not specifically about being trans that involve characters--minor or major, but not main characters--whose gender changes through the story

(I say not main characters because if a main character realized they were trans partway through, that kind of makes at least part of the story about being trans)

and i don't mean some kind of magic transformation thing, I mean they change their presentation and pronouns and name and stuff

it sounds like i did but it was kind of a misunderstanding and i think it's probably going to be okay? still high anxiety though it's getting lower

worried I might have upset a very close friend and not sure if they're talking about me but also really really not wanting to lose that friendship

(it is currently apple season and so the grocery stores have lots of (non-alcoholic) apple cider in stock and it is very good, we got a gallon of it last time we went to the store)

Show thread

I keep wanting to talk about how apple cider is good and stuff but now that we know that outside the US, "apple cider" means an alcoholic drink, i'm a lot less comfortable doing so because we don't drink alcohol and never want to and don't want people thinking we are

random thought: are there any non-human animals with material culture of any sort? I want to say no but there're sometimes some surprising things from corvids and apes

(however if you go around saying that anything you don't understand is Evil then you should probably stop that too)

Show thread

this applies even if you fail to understand something; the fact that you don't understand does not make you a bad person. You don't call someone a bad person because they can't wrap their head(s) around calculus, right? (well, if you do, then stop that)

Show thread

Reminder that not understanding something doesn't make you a bad person; it's refusing to even try to understand that does that

how to annoy people: do all your length measurements in ∛̅g̅a̅l

There are definitely more profound realizations out there and even ones we've had but something about that one just seems... really meaningful? especially in the context of entropy always increasing.

Show thread

The equivalence between entropy and information is one of the most... profound things that I think we've ever encountered

Fun fact: The Czochralski process, which is one of the best ways to produce large single crystals of a material (used industrially to produce exceptionally pure silicon crystals for semiconductor devices), was invented when the Polish chemist Jan Czochralski accidentally dipped his pen in a pot of molten tin instead of an inkwell.

Moral of the story: keep pots of molten tin around, maybe you'll accidentally get your name attached to a hugely important industrial process

induction motors are basically just transformers that spin

fedi meta question

what exactly is the appeal of pleroma over some fork of mastodon anyway

I see a few people using it but: why? what features does it have that make someone choose it? all I know about it is that its interface and appearance are Very Weird

i'm sure that was a design decision that made some amount of sense at the time but it's kind of weird since that's something that would be a very special-purpose application today

Show thread

the fact that x11 is designed so that you can display windows on another computer entirely is really weird to me

random thought: how long until we get smart locks that are smart enough to not have exposed screws to take them apart with, but still have an exposed USB port for charging, making "overvolt it and blow up the battery" a feasible attack on a lock
