it's kind of weird that the vowel in the english -ed past tense ending is never pronounced, but can be pronounced when the meter of a poem or song demands it and it doesn't sound odd to native speakers.
also the difference between the words learned and learnèd which i think is the only case of a diacritical mark being used in a native english word

90s RPGs can be very obtuse sometimes. How were we supposed to know without looking it up that "the cave east of town" means "go west, then south, so you can come around back northeast and reach a hidden cave" instead of "head east and go into the cave" (you can't) or "find some secret way further into the tiny cave that's on the east side of this town that someone's running an armor shop out of" (there isn't one)?
