why the hell is chargin' chuck classified as a powerup in super mario's code anyway

this is the marx from kirby by the way, not karl marx

...it'd probably suit an evil groucho marx too though

Show thread

marx's theme is really good actually

I love how chaotic it sounds, suits marx perfectly

no, you don't get any context for this

because I don't have any either

that fruit craving was so strong that I wonder if it's some kind of vitamin deficiency.... we've heard those can cause cravings for foods that contain the relevant vitamins (or ones that are likely to)

Show thread

this is a serious question by the way, in case anyone actually knows the answer please let me know

why does every car's steering wheel seem to turn one and a half rotations in either direction from neutral

it's always one and a half, never anything else

sudden strong craving for fruit, for some reason

fortunately we needed to go to the grocery store anyway so we got one of those little bowls full of fruit. this one is honeydew melon, our favorite kind

knowing what I know about the way the SNES works, I have one question

how the actual fuck did they port doom to it

linguistics/conlang thought

imagine a language with mandatory pronouns, where in addition to taking the place of nouns they are also required alongside all nouns (perhaps they evolved from what were previously inflectional affixes)

for an example of what i'm thinking, doing this with english would read like "He the boy read it the book"

are there any natural languages that do this, I wonder? It seems like a reasonable enough thing for a language to do.

apparently there were historical christian sects that held that the old and new testaments (the two halves of the christian bible) were written under the guidance of two different gods, which is an interesting concept and it's unfortunate that this happened at a time when the christian church was very prone to just stamp out anyone with differing opinions on their religion (there has never not been such a time as far as we know though)

the Hearth :ms_agender_flag: boosted

also why do they call it a squirrel cage and not like, a rat wheel or something because it sure looks a lot more like one of those exercise wheels you give to rodents than it does anything you'd use to capture a squirrel

why would you want to cage a squirrel anyway

Show thread

why exactly do squirrel-cage induction motors have the bars in their rotors angled like that anyway

different people have different experiences and sometimes it throws us off a bit when something you consider to be a _very_ basic thing, one of the absolute classics, turns out to be something someone else has never heard of

Show thread

then again, this is the same video in which I learned that the apparently quite well-known spy vs spy was a video game and not a cartoon (hey, that art style looks very much like it could be a hannah-barbara cartoon or something) (it was the game underneath phantasy star in the stack, and the guy said "oh now this one I know, this was one of my favorites on the amiga")

Show thread

to be fair he mostly does stuff about 8-bit computers like the C64 and early PC-compatibles, rather than dedicated video game consoles but still

it's _phantasy star_.

not the greatest game ever (people do look back very fondly on it though) but surely the _series_ would be recognisable at least?

Show thread

like, how do you do anything even tangentially related to video games and not know the name phantasy star

Show thread

just saw a video where someone who does retro computer and video game stuff was talking about stuff people sent him

he got a box full of sega master system stuff, pulls a boxed copy of Phantasy Star off the top of it, "I'm not familiar with this one" puts it aside
