@qdot ... how has 2019 produced a narrative that I agree with Jeff B on? What even is this timeline.

Seattle Area: Winter Storm Warning Update

National Weather Service update on the upcoming storm (9:20am PST Feb 7th):
forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx

TLDR: Expect snow accumulations of 5-10" falling mostly Friday night into Saturday morning, where strong winds (15-30 MPH with 40MPH gusts) will result in blizzard conditions.

Good news: The forecast temperature dropped enough that most precipitation should fall as snow instead of freezing rain (which would have guaranteed significant power outages).

winter storm prep tips

Suggestion to prep for things ahead of time:

Turn off your home's breakers (or individual rooms with the switches) and see what kinda food you're able to make, entertainment you're able to have, and if you can stay reasonably warm with blankets and other passive heating devices (or that you have wood to burn if you have a chimney).

This will help you identify gaps in your electrical outage preparation.

Some pointed questions:
- Can your oven run without electricity?
- Can your stove top run without electricity?
- Do you need a blender, dishwasher, electric coffee maker, toaster, or other wall-outlet-powered device in the course of your everyday life? Can you replace it with a non-electric equivalent temporarily (dishes by hand, toasting over the stove top, etc)?
- How often are you going to have to open your fridge to feed yourself?
- Do you have battery backups to charge your phone off of?

This BIG male Pileated Woodpecker that visited us yesterday is very tolerant of a small female Downy Woodpecker pecking at the same suet block.

@kirbizard Yeah, it did the same thing to me. Best update. :D

@kirbizard (I know this because I patched to Fortuna earlier today when I should be working.)

@kirbizard Close the app. Nintendo is distributing it via a binary update, so the patcher shouldn’t work.

@kirbizard Yeah, stacking the right damage is just silly. And that’s before doubling it with Excal Umbra, which I’ve found to be scary (scary, scary) when given a properly modded Rubico.

one more about the bubsy kickstarter

@Dex The closest I’ve seen to this is Humble Bundle or oddly specific Steam or GoG sales. It’s really weird to see a KS include rewards from an otherwise-completely-unrelated series and developer.

I think I want to call this a cereal box promotion for the new game.

Twitter hijinks, Venezuela, pol (-) (boost with CW)

@troodon It’s probably going to be really interesting when Dem-led anticorruption probes take a look at Twitter and Facebook.

They did the same thing with Ukrainian dissidents, and it’s a consistently strange pattern that cannot fully be explained by algorithmic blocking.

re: My house almost burned down yesterday!

@mawr Recommendations sent! (For those reading, we used ECO Electric out here.)

Also, neutral*, not ground neutral (which is not a real thing). Silly editing.

My house almost burned down yesterday!

@mawr Yikes!

Also... same. We fried ground neutral here back in December, after someone visiting put a space heater on one of the only ungrounded lines in our house. Thankfully, it shorted gracefully.

Ours is a ‘68 construction, so similar wiring plan. We upgraded the lines, panel box, and added a surge protector to the house line.

Good news is I can recommend a company to do this work for you?

@salameleon@snouts.online 2:29 is a pretty good time for getting confused by a seed, based on the LttPR games I’ve watched in the past.

Also, I had no idea death and fairies took priority over the fall animation. Neat.

Lighting/IOT concerns, open question

@Kyresti As long as the physical light switches and accessories are all on the same network, the thing works fine. And as long as it’s not sitting on your home router, evil folks can’t do much more than black out the bulbs locally.

So, with all that in place, we Hued our entire living room a few years back, and they work great.
