My birthday is tomorrow and so far the extent of my plans for it is “go to work as usual” and “complain about how my ankle hasn’t healed from the bike accident yet”. Dirty abrasions are slow to heal, I guess

I have seen no small amount of “stop giving weird technical advice in response to social problems” toots lately, and I think that’s an important perspective to keep when moderating and maintaining communities - community owners are the bridge between technical skill and social need.

That said, I offer nerdsplaining as a service: if you want to know what some opaque piece of tech phrasing means, and why nerds seem to care about it so much, ask me and I’ll do my best to make it make sense

@shadowfirebird @luciferMysticus yeah, I know that well. I work professionally on software that I consider categorically dubious - an autoupdater - and I refuse to let it do anything other than update exactly what the user installed. (Not a hard sell, my teammates are with me on this.)

But we can’t close “all possible avenues for silent remote code execution” when it exists for the purpose of silent remote code execution. (We work damn hard to ensure it’s the right code though)

Github is aimed at software developers. GitHub threads will therefore tend towards discussions based on what is mathematically possible drowning out conversations about what is socially desirable. This is normal; computer programmers are required to argue with an electric abacus all day and it is a notoriously finicky and uncompromising device.

I have been informed that people would like to know when my birthday is, instead of my usual efforts to get it ignored, and it’s relevant since it’s next Friday (June 8th).
