@Oneironott They found the tech to live forever and avoid accidental death. There were no more people being born and thus the need to expand wasn't there. It seems like *every* human pursuit at that point is a game, I don't see any suggestions people are hungry or wanting beyond avoiding ennui. Ultimately, when you don't need somewhere to go and you've found nothing exciting looking... Play is what you have left?

@Oneironott The fact it was all from the perspective of 20th century probes that gained awareness and were dealing with the loss of purpose kinda just... struck me well? It started from such a brilliant note I couldn't mind it. Also lacking the *needs* of this body and the constraints added by time would... Make me mind it a lot less. I'd be healthy, I could sleep without shame... A day spent doing fuck all but playing with cups, water and a laser pointer wouldn't break me?

Think of it like a science project. This universe is like an experiment in a perfect vacuum-- the results don't make sense in our reality because we don't live in a vacuum, but the results are still interesting and can be learned from.

@mawr @Oneironott @IrisKalmia Same here, honestly. The most recent chapters also get into the kind of existential horror that comes from everything staying the same itself somewhat, personally I'm waiting out what else comes from this - I smell deep plot waiting to happen.

There is a book called The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia. It is a send up of the tale of the Grasshopper and the Ant. It argued that the core of human endeavor, is play. Meaning comes, from play. The pursuit of knowledge, power, life and liberty that currently permiate our existence are only a result of scarcity. Once that is removed and people no longer seek external validation, they will turn to play for the love of it.

Every Utopia is a no where place. The book was written well past the turn into Distopia fiction, and it is written in such a playful manor that it is difficult to intuit if the author intended to stand by his arguments or to present them for fun.

Every Utopia is also a vision of true things and hope. But because matter does not stay pure for long, they are true things which exist in no place. Instead, they offer guides of mind.

@Oneironott so yeah one idea I have is around various extensions of neuromapping. there's sooooo many things we'll be able to do once we can split off and change little bits of ourselves in a controlled manner

- changing yourself to make yourself more confident or talk like a water nymph or whatever the hecku
- this is the part I'm really excited about is you can craft little agreements w/ yourself to create things, and then show them to the rest of yourself and it feels brand new
- also you can get up to some bedroom stuff with all that!

it wont be environmentally catastrophic to move people if you can just send (multiply backed-up) mind-info and reconstruct the body at the destination planet

@Oneironott which, yeah, you'd need a way to do that (and probably not an Arbitrary Matter Creator because thats way too dangerous) but it seems very doable and with "many people want different bodies!" now in the mainstream and increasingly acknowledged in/part of tech, well.
