re: linux troubles
there's a date quickly approaching that I'm looking forward to: january 2020, when Microsoft ends extended support for Windows 7
There are millions of users out there clinging to 7 as the last great Microsoft OS before they devolved into mobile interfaces and ad-supported hell, and there's suddenly be a LOT of people looking to Linux as their new go to
so like, shortly before or shortly after there's going to be a lot of clamoring for new levels of support and compatibility and user-friendliness, and some really incredible things could happen, especially if Steam Proton has matured somewhat by that point
I feel really, REALLY conflicted about putting my trust in Steam for literally anything, but if anything can make running Windows games on Linux easier, it's Valve throwing shittons of money at the R&D, right
anyway yeah I'll take another look at mint in a year and a half I guess, haha
Or like... sooner, if Warframe becomes seamlessly supported in Steam Proton (and it's already very close)
like... I jumped on Mint and immediately had a perfectly functioning version of Discord, Opera, Telegram, Spotify...
What's actually still keeping me here? Warframe, a couple of AAA PC titles coming next year, and Clip Studio, that's it
I really liked just about every part of setting Mint up -except- fucking around for a combined like 10 hours trying to get Warframe to run, haha. Just fix that and I'm hella there
@ShugoWah Yeah if Steam Proton turns out even half as good as I hope, that's gonna make a strong case for me moving over to Mint or something like it, tbqh

@ShugoWah it's gonna be bug-busting year for all the major desktop environments
@ShugoWah give kubuntu a look as well. A lot easier for new users, I think. Also has a fantastic window manager

@ShugoWah same! the main reason i use windows is because it's the only thing i can get fl studio to run on--and it has better tablet support for things like sai
but, the way that each update on 10 seems to break another part of my workflow really isn't convincing me i want to use it more. (i mean, what are they even doing to tablets??)
@ShugoWah mind you, some things are nicer on 10 now, like WSL! that's a really cool project--also, VS is nice!
but at the same time, i suspect we might see a version of fl studio on linux because delphi now has compilers for it! tablet support is getting nicer, and i've been thinking of using AzPainter anyway, since one of my favorite artists uses it well!
i have nooo idea how things will pan out, but i might have enough reasons to go 100% linux again if i can actually do all my projects on it
@ShugoWah I mean shit even my streaming software has native Linux support... if I can get it to behave with most of the stuff I play, I've got no real compelling reason to keep using Windows.
@ShugoWah clip studio is super nice, and what i use most of the time
i've found krita is increasingly competent as a replacement as well (and since it's free i can recommend it to friends to just Try and see if they end up preferring a specialised paint program over GIMP or PS)
and there's a few things krita does better, like colours mixing don't get super dark like they do by default in other apps (fixable in some, but not others)
i've not actually switched over yet, but i might if i have to leave osx
@ShugoWah (much like with ms ending support for win7, there isn't much longer left for osx 10.11, which i'm on. 10.12 was really bad on my desktop and whatever the newest version is apparently needs newer hardware than i have... so it's looking like i'll switch to a bsd or something)
@ShugoWah valve has made a cocksleigh of good faith contributions to open source. SDL and xpad wouldn't be where they are today without them

@Lunatic_Moth The cool thing is that as far as I know, Wine doesn't actually use any copyrighted Windows code, it just translates instructions, so it's completely safe from a legal standpoint
@Lunatic_Moth @ShugoWah considering how long wine has been a thing, and that some MS devs use it internally, I don't see that happening
@ShugoWah it's true! valve has been super-dubious on quite a few fronts, but their linux efforts have been actually Pretty Tremendous
i've primarily used linux for nearly the last decade, and i can definitely say that there have been lots of improvements in interest and support
i mean, it's not perfect... there are still usability issues for people who don't know the system well, but things are *so* much better now than they were before, and i think valve played no small part in that

Or at the very, very least, there'll be lots of new up-to-date media about making the switch and learning that new space smoothly
