@ArrBianca usually that means the internal battery that maintains configuration state went dead (the little CR2032 coin cell in desktops... not sure what laptops use)

You get "checksum invalid" because the memory holding that configuration resets to... whatever its uninitialised values are, which are basically junk values.

@XerTheSquirrel I mean, maybe. But the whole idea behind this thing was that it was whitelist-based. So I'm not going to hold out for that unless someone specifically says they'll do it.

I probably won't look around today or anything (too tired anyway), but chances are, I'll end up moving. There are lots of options out there at least, though.

And I sort-of know a mod on one, so I know they're run by good people.

@gc@cybre.space I made this account like, probably a year or so ago, before people really started using this thing. So there were a lot fewer instances, volume was really low, and it wasn't a problem.

I may have to change instances on this thing. The idea behind instance whitelisting was very good, but I don't think they can keep up with the sheer number of them, and I've already got some people I know that I can't follow here because of it.

It's not a BAD idea, but I'm not going to fragment my friend list.

@PK they did it in FF9 too. But I dunno, it's fine, only relatively recent games get full voice acting anyway, and only the big AAA stuff, for the most part.

@XerTheSquirrel yeah, I knew that. Again, I don't know how fediverse handles cross-instance stuff, but I had thought that even being able to search+display their profile at all meant it was allowed, but trying to follow ends up failing.

I like the whitelist model, but with everyone in the world and their dog spinning up their own custom instances, I'm not sure it's going to be able to keep up.

anyone have any good explanation for why it seems like half the people I try to add here just return a 404 error?

I don't feel like digging into how this whole thing handles federation, blah blah blah, I already hate computers enough.

@thingywott yeah, I like it. A lot of people on birdsite (myself included) end up just tacking a few things like this on the end of their profiles, but I sort of like that this separates the freeform profile from like... hm.

I guess the table sort of feels like a sort of "elevated significance" set of quick facts or something? Anyway, I like it.

I never really put a real profile on this thing because I honestly wasn't expecting to use it much, but I guess I should do that sometime.

The freeform table thing is neat, though. Good place to stick pronouns, so I did that.
