Getting the "oh why don't you just grow out your hairrrr?" talk from my family again.
Me: "Queer visibility is important."
Dad: "Do you have to be... *so*... visible?"
It's just like *big eyeroll*. We've been having this discussion for, like, eight years. They're mostly supportive, just still so weirdly uncomfortable with my queerness.
@Sparrow sigh
that reminds me, need to talk with my parents about how to Handle my extended family over the holidays ...
Eek, that's a Big Thing. I wish you all of the luck, resilience, and warmth to get through that interaction.
I'm in a weird place where I'm more "out" with some of my extended family than my immediate. My parents think I'm a lesbian, but a few cousins and my gay uncle know I'm nonbinary.
@Sparrow 💙 thanks
and all the same to you -- the long haul is Tough
@Sparrow I feel like your dad answered his own question.
@Sparrow 😔 if you're lucky he does and just has a shit vocabulary and experience. If you're not he's just lacking all of it. Ughhhhh.
I hope you're on the lucky side, anyway. FWIW, Mallory Ortberg says aggressively changing (or let's say refusing to change) your hair every time you want to upset your family is Queer Culture. ✊️
I think it's more likely he just has a poor vocabulary and limited understanding about the politics of hairstyle and identity. He has come around in a lot of ways over this past decade. It's just irritating that it's taking him so long.
Hahaha, that's absolutely true and I like it a lot.
@Sparrow "no but my hair needs to be this awesome", i assume you replied
Pretty much! :P (& <3 thank you!)
@Sparrow :-/
