there's a local squirrel I've nicknamed "Stubby" because it's got about half the amount of fluffy tail a squirrel usually has. Stubby seems to function perfectly well as a squirrel, but it's just kinda... weird-looking.

@anthracite @InspectorCaracal@tootplanet.space I'm reminded of how many times I've had the Thomas Covenant series recced to me, and that I got like 20 pages into the first book and said "NOPE" and threw it across the room. I don't care if it gets better later on; I got to The Stopping Point and fucking *stopped*. Done Now, Don't Care

when owls attack
@Altivo barred are the most common around here; we've got great horned and... several others, but every autumn some percentage of Seattle people get mauled by barred owls preemptively defending their turf while nesting/courting. I've been buzzed by one, though it didn't actually hit me, fortunately--the description I've read is "like being hit in the back of the head by a bag full of scissors." I don't want to try it! XD

@kara@occult.camp I've been doing a little research on my end, evidently in colder climates laurels do best as indoor-ish/greenhouse trees, and they can stay pretty small without ill effects. I'm definitely interested in giving it a try! :D

@Kyna @kara@occult.camp if you're thinking of renting it, since you live a long way away from the property, getting a good, ethical rental management company is a must. the management company will take a cut of the rent, but they'll be versed in local property laws, able to interact with renters, and already have relationships with local repair/upkeep businesses.
