ah, yeah, it's mostly BC wildfires--here's a good comprehensive article about it: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/weather/article/Hot-and-hazy-Smoke-from-B-C-fires-will-hang-11727786.php#photo-13608085
also do any Seattle people know what's with the haze? I overheard somebody say something about "the fires" but that's all I've heard about it. it's so thick that the sunlight was orange for part of my trip home, and everything looked almost foggy. it might be something that's more obvious/prevalent farther north.
payment / donation systems
following up on this a day later, i want to be clear: i'm not saying you shouldn't use these platforms because their ethics are questionable. my concern is that these platforms may discriminate against *you, specifically* because of the things you
may need to do to survive. use whatever works to your heart's content, but while your income is tied to any one them, your survival is tied to their terms 😬 we can do better for each other. we can all have a tomorrow!
I woke up trying to run across a room to the next door (because if I pay attention to it, running in dreams is always terrible and difficult) with Bendyparts Crumplebun yelling "COME ON! WE HAVE TO GET THROUGH THE DOOR!" at me and I was so annoyed at him I think that actually was what woke me up.
and then there was a semi-post-apocalyptic "biker gang" (literally a bunch of teenagers on bicycles) who were threatening us (suddenly I was a character in this scenario), and so we ran through the ingenious trap that had been set up of long rooms with several doors so we'd be difficult to follow.
THE THING THAT ANNOYED ME was that during the "rooms with doors" sequence the POC turned into Bandersnatch Humperdink and I was like "SERIOUSLY YOU ARE WHITEWASHING ROLES EVEN IN MY DREAMS?? FUCK OFF"
oh and also I had a dream where a POC (I'm not sure of their gender, but they were very attractive, dark-skinned, with long thick cornrows and a KILLER dark red coat/hat combo) had invented... something, like the scenario was vaguely post-apocalypse and the invention made things work without batteries or other power? they looked like little toy cars filled with little wheels, and you could chain them together to make a "power cord."
@mawr the intake person said the conversation was very confusing. like the people that brought in the owl thought it might have been poisoned by eating the snake?? XD that's not... how *any* of that works!
I have huge amounts of lack of envy for the intake person's job. I couldn't possibly do it. I've listened to her half of phone conversations, and just... nooooooooo
non-explicit animal death & badstuff
the downer was a Cooper's hawk whose condition was deteriorating and had to be put down. I glanced in while I was cleaning the bird ward and he looked angry and alert, but he seemed to have a fracture or break in his spine somewhere, and was having increasing trouble breathing. :(
also they got a baby skunk, which is rare; its prognosis is very mixed, and they do better with siblings, but we don't have any for this one.
part of the reason I'm not immediately documenting my volunteering today is that it was pretty dull, really. the only thing of note that happened was kind of a downer. oh, except maybe for the story of the great horned owl that was brought in "because it was eating a snake"???? it's also got some damaged tailfeathers and is having difficulty flying, but seems otherwise completely healthy.
Self care; self loathing
@adeptomega I know that feeling, far too well. starting a garden sounds like an excellent counter!
shameful birding admission: I *cannot* tell sparrows apart. they are all similarly-sized, similarly-colored little brownish birds. there's at least three common varieties in this area and damn if I can tell which one a given bird is. part of it is knowing their songs/calls, and most of the time I don't even hear them make noise.
@emanate this is one of the few times I kinda wish I had a job, because that would be nice. >____< as it is I may have to make an expedition to ride the air-conditioned bus line during the height of the heat on Thursday...
Here we go. Decided to just use an excerpt from the story as the blurb. #Writing
