gawd I love Robot Hugs. http://www.robot-hugs.com/whump/
also I have a guess why the crows are avoiding my porch: I suspect Nar pounced at them and scared them away, especially if the juvenile was on the floor of the porch and thus close enough that Nar could have reached it--if there wasn't a door in the way. of course the *whole point* of attracting birds to the porch is to give the indoors-only cats Bird TV enrichment, so. ah well... I'll just keep putting out peanuts and suet, and hope they come back.
the eagle is an adult and doesn't need hazing; last I heard they had three, and all of them are pretty keen to murder any human who gets within reach of them. plus eagles are HUGE. like, that eagle could take me down, no problem. they're really intimidating up close. XD
I need to buy a big floppy hat, because otherwise I am going to have a serious sunstroke episode walking to the bus stop from volunteering one of these days--especially as it gets hotter. :|
IN OTHER NEWS volunteer day! I saw a sad owl (very fragile, they don't know what's wrong with it), a bunch of raccoons (I was learning how to clean their enclosure and I got to do "hazing" which meant being scary at them which was FUN) and an eagle (from a distance, between slats).
apropos, if somebody can figure out what the sweet chai from Lyon's Den is and score me a bunch of it, or tell me where to get it online, I will be... very grateful and happy. :D seriously I am craving it right now and *nothing else will do*. *drinks another pint of water instead*
also after two iced sweet chais at the Lyon's Den, the "strawberry infused black tea" thing from Starbucks (C)(TM)(R) was *extremely* disappointing. it didn't help that it was supposed to have lemonade in it, which for some reason was omitted, leaving only a faint sweet note and a lot of bitterness from the black tea. when you leave the lemonade out it becomes very obvious why the lemonade is added in the first place. :P
book gender binary unpleasantness
that line in my head, for instance, that was crossed somewhere in the first quarter of the Thomas Covenant series, and which caused me to throw the book against a wall and never want to pick the series up again, and if you've read it you probably know exactly what I mean. :D
book gender binary unpleasantness
one thing I don't like about "Book of the New Sun" is how painfully gendered it is. there's a whole lot of "men do x, women do y" stuff that's related as profound truths. of course, it's written from the POV of a narrator who is shown to be unreliable, but still. plus the way the male narrator acts towards women is kind of gross, both in specific instances and overall attitude, though not quite enough to cross the line in my head.
discourse tagging
Thank you, awoo-ers in particular, for being so good about tagging it. This is something I always hated about Birdsite, that you couldn't avoid it when you were having a bad time. If I had something to say, I had to hope I used a word they'd blocked if they weren't up to hearing it.
Now I can participate on my terms, and others can as well.
Stay safe out there
hmm. the crow family is behaving as if something in this area--the area of my porch, and the grass/tree area around it--frightened them; they're being a lot more wary and avoidant than they were a few days ago. I would attribute this to the loss of one of their fledglings, except that happened over a week ago, and they were behaving just as usual then. I wish I could ask them--or better still, convince them that my porch and Cheerios/peanuts are still safe. :\
I figured I'd post about it here (while also hitting Google with a stick repeatedly) in case somebody will say "oh yeah that's [thing]!" :P
I could *swear* I've seen a painting of this creature; it's looking at the viewer, and it looks--calm, kind of sad; the painting is in muddy earth tones; it might have stars in its crown. there's a Biblical association in my head, but I have no idea if it's a monster from the Bible?
