I think the brands-as-identity thing might just be the way that imperialist colonies naturally work, as apposed to something that's Australia specific. There's not a lot else to work with under capitalism when you don't have a particularly long history away from the country(s) of origin.

Particularly accomplished enemies were repurposed into AI, one of which probably intentionally caused their extinction. Another one is the shrill orb from halo 1
