don't have enough HDMI cables? no problem, this cursed adapter allows you to use two RJ45 instead!

@noiob Apparently HDMI over Ethernet is very much a Thing, but due to the large bandwidth difference it's not a very good Thing.

@onf I mean a cable is a cable so I guess something will end up on the other end

@noiob What I'm saying is that a lot of these adapters cheat and have a little chip inside that compresses the video so it can be transmitted via IP NETWORKING. And realtime compression on something of that size with its power limits is of course, really bad.

@noiob Through one cable and for a lot more money. (If only...)

I have no idea what you posted does, surely not what I just described, but those do exist.

@noiob What's interesting about the IP ones is that since they use IP, you could connect it to any PC and use it as a receiver, turning it into a really crappy (but cheap by those standards) capture card.

@noiob Gives me hope that by the time we get the next Ethernet standard (10gb?) it'll be fast enough that we can just send uncompressed HD video over IP. Very silly, but useful.

@noiob I've never seen it used but HDMI can use Ethernet

@Siphonay I can assure you that this is not that, the real thing costs a lot more

@noiob I've definitely seen these on Amazon or something. it seems to be somewhat common to have this double-ethernet carrier

@obw anything you can get on AliExpress you can get for a few bucks more on Amazon

@noiob while looking for these I came across whatever the hell this claims to be

@obw if it does what it claims it's impressive

@noiob somehow I doubt cat5e can handle the bandwidth of hdmi

@noiob the cat5e standard only specifies performance up to 100MHz, though some manufacturers specify out to 350MHz

I guess if you're using all four pairs on both cables the standard would get you 800MHz, or about 800Mbps, so I guess you could do 1.65Gbps if you use cable rated for higher than the standard requires (or cat6 cable, which is specified up to 250MHz), though I'm not 100% certain that 100MHz rating was per wire pair

@Felthry I guess it'll only support lower resolutions, or not work at all… I kinda wanna buy one to try it

@noiob well, if it's cheap, go for it! make sure you use max-length (100m) ethernet cables to get the full experience

@noiob I wouldn't trust a passive adapter like that, but active "balun" adapters like that are needed to run HDMI longish distances, like from a podium to a projector.

@dipolecat idk what you misunderstood about "cursed" but I wouldn't buy this to actually use
