why do people keep using those qr code generator websites that add a short link that decays

it's not enough that there's Edge ads whenever it detects a Chrome instance, now other apps get to do the same thing?
I opened a PDF in Firefox (didn't even want to view it, I just have downloaded PDFs open automatically) and Adobe Acrobat popped a notification "hey you should totally set me as your default PDF viewer"… but it wasn't running? like how does that work?
