update: python3 apparently has unicode as the default strings, my error was that I was trying to encode them in unicode when they already were that and the surrounding code would eat the error message
well I sure learnt something today
@jk @sara oh god this reminds me of a loriot sketch that's just "we are now showing the new release of ultra-widescreen film, which depicts the 100m run in its entirety on a super-wide screen, adapted for tv" and then they just show a three lines high picture in which you can almost make out the runners advancing on the track, with enthusiastic sports commentary
I mean, one of them will fix typos and replace "his/her" with "their" in the comments but still
