long, on moving to Masto
posted this on Twitter but it's probably useful here too:
I'm not gonna say "join Mastodon" or "don't join Mastodon" but please don't join the two instances run by the main developer (mastodon social and mastodon online), they're hopelessly overrun and as a result of that not well-moderated.
Join a small or medium-sized instance and use the public timelines. They're made up from ppl who people on the instance follow, which is why there's instances built around different topics (but you're usually welcome to post about anything). Hmu if you want a recommendation
You can also create multiple accounts, all the good apps support multi-user (I'm recommending Tusky on Android and Toot! (paid) for iOS), if you for example want an AD or an account for gaming and a personal one I'd highly recommend creating them on different instances
If you're new to the Fediverse, here's what made the platform work for me: aggressively following and unfollowing new people.
Whatever standards you've built up on Twitter for deciding to follow someone, throw them out the window. Follow someone because they made a funny or insightful post. Follow someone because their bio says they like pesto. Follow someone because they have a cute fursona. Anything really.
Following is free. And if it doesn't work out, unfollowing is also free.
Additionally, there's an "unlisted" setting - this is still public, people can boost it and it shows up on your profile, except it doesn't land on the local/federated timelines. Good if you want to talk about a thing without locking it to private, but also don't want random strangers coming into your conversation.
#feditips for twitter critters: Locking your account so you can decide who you want following you is /completely separate/ from your posts only being visible to your followers - and you can do that on a per-post basis, regardless of whether your account is locked or not!
#feditips some people on mastodon like to make what are colloquially known as "shitposts" but, not to worry!, these posts often have nothing to do at all with actual shid
The blogging platform powering my blog, @writefreely, is one of many that can communicate with our community / Mastodon.
There's also @pixelfed (like Instagram), @peertube (like YouTube), and many others.
⚠️ Hey, it is great that you like chaos.social enough to invite other people her. But please remember to only use single invites and not big or unlimited invite links. Yes this needs a click more but I just disabled over 20 unlimited invites. So if your invite doesn't work, remember this toot. ⚠️ #announcement #mastoadmin
I've temporarily opened invites for all awoo.space users, you can now generate invite links for your friends if they wanna come here. Don't share them publicly. they're under https://awoo.space/invites
I'm not sure if I'm gonna actually use it much but I've had that account for a while because Tumblr is annoying on mobile outside the app, might as well make it official
y'know what, fuck it https://the-shork.tumblr.com
rule of thumb: decentralised technology is only as good as the least technically inclined user who is empowered run it themselves
bittorrent: this is the benchmark
fediverse: good luck mate
