uh, apparently having animated avatars play all the time totally wrecks my video decode? like Youtube only shows one frame a second broken. This is in Firefox, so in case your Firefox has some serious problems with videos while Masto is open consider turning off Gif autoplay (which also makes animated avatars play on hover, something that used to be default anyways and I'm not a fan of the change)
