I didnt know this but the Playdate console trademark is older than I thought; Panic filed it sometime in 2016, a few months after the Playdate event in LA started.
There's a reasonable chance they didn't know about it, which is possibly why they sent that shit email in 2018.

FTR: Panic did try to get a more diverse group of people for season 1, but they were turned down, but they're going to try to improve whatever it is that they do so that barriers that might lead to them being turned down aren't there next time.

Natalie Lawson (one of the organisers at the original Playdate) doesn't want people to trash the console, just for Panic to understand the power dynamics and not fuck up next time, and both from Cabel's response and Playdate's they seem to understand this and sending that email (which was threatening whether they actually wanted it to be or not) was a shit idea.
