@soft_chomps@glitch.social Ahhh. 3D would make things /more/ vague for my game. XP Lots of.. Requirement for strict LoS rules like in tactical games, but in natural environments that would be harder to discern the implications of for LoS in full-3D.

But I guess I'm also kinda scared of the amt of asset creation that tends to shoot through the roof with 3D, too.. There're free asset libraries, but I really wanna make my own critters & biomes.

@soft_chomps@glitch.social Ohh, I didn't realise yours isn't gonna be turn-based. That does present a lotta different challenges, yeah!

@soft_chomps@glitch.social it's not a perfect fix (they still needed the different elevation viewer), but.. It's the best alternative I've seen to having everything be rigid cubes, like in Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea & co.

@soft_chomps@glitch.social Have you played the older X-Com games (1 & 2)? They handle this problem rlly well, as well as dense foliage/wooded environments, which are something I wanna focus on.

It requires a certain aesthetic; It wouldn't work with the more cinematic-meets-realism style of the reboots. The fact that they were using pixel art & clearly drawn diagonal vectors overlaid on the terrain is key, and wouldn't work with a lotta art styles imo.
