Okay y'all!
What're your favorite spaceship names (that aren't from Ian Banks)?
@starkatt If I can't use Banks, then I think I'd have to pick ship names from the Star Trek 'verse. They really go out of there way to make a naming scheme that pays attention to current naval traditions (using the class name as the ship name for the first ship of a given class, and adding letter designators to historically significant or legacy names.
@starkatt I'm kinda fond of Hot Needle Of Inquiry, or Lying Bastard, both from Niven's Ringworld series. :-)
@starkatt Torquemada's Monkey Wrench was the name of a ship in a SW tabletop game I was in once, and it's always stuck in my head.
@starkatt In no particular order:
* Leaky Reactor
* Smuggling Freighter
* Not A Covert Op
* Secretariat's Seventh Cousin
* Several Leftover Fasteners
* We Make Holes In Teeth
And of course, the perennial favorite:
* Minimum Safe Distance
@Soreth gosh what are those from?
@starkatt Oh shit, you meant actual ships from works of fiction. These are all names my old gaming group brainstormed up for a spacefaring campaign.
@Soreth THEY'RE REALLY GOOD.
@starkatt The Eventuallly Consistent.
@starkatt this is less "favorites," exactly, and more "I got to this page of the book giggled, and remembered you asked this question." unfortunately this app won't let me copypasta, only screenshot?
The one I keep coming back to is "Pillar of Autumn" from Halo 1. Something about that name is just perfection.
But the new fast-upcoming contender is "Weeping Somnambulist" from The Expanse.
