And now for something completely different!

What does "butch" mean to you? I've had two separate people close to me call me by that label in a week, which I found pretty surprising.

This is a good time to mention that I would *love* a privacy setting that posts public to the local timeline but not federated timelines.

Ah, okay. I figured out what went wrong here.

I set the post to Public, not thinking about how that it would mean it spreading off of my instance and into other spaces that lack the cultural context.

...So they'll be unlisted in the future.

@literorrery @ElectricKeet Sure. But for the Genderoftheday posts, it *is* pretty easy to arrive at an unintended reading from outside of the intended audience/context.

@ElectricKeet I think it's important to keep in mind that the target audience and the total audience can be different, though. A post being read in a way other than what was intended doesn't mean I'm absolved from consequences of that reading.

In all seriousness though, if a transphobe can read a Gender of the Day post and think I'm on their team, is this... really a good thing for me to be doing?

It's an easy joke to misread without context.

This is not the first, second, or probably even third time in my life I've said "the context is lesbians".

I should probably give context for this toot.

... the context is lesbians.

"I'm the kind of girl who tightens her own screws, y'know?"

Me: "I need to read more primary sources about communism and anarchism."

Me: "...wait my partner literally just bought a tall stack of books so she could do that. So the books are right there."

@benhamill@witches.town according to the Wikipedia page, kenning is a Norse / Old English thing of using a constructed compound of 2+ words instead of the obvious word.

Though I guess tbf wikipedia is pretty bad at not listing usages of words in other contexts.

@benhamill@witches.town Thanks! I learned a new thing!

Not quite the same thing, but pretty cool.

(btw if the grammar in my toots is fucked up, it's most likely because I changed the sentence structure once or twice while composing and didn't fully proofread the result.)

Actually, now that I think about it, it's socially pretty terrible that "epithet" was at some point started to be used as euphemism for "slur".
