If anyone has ever told you that programming is more essential than a second language, they are lying to you. They want more programmers to pay the rest less. The world doesn't need more unhappy programmers who hate their jobs and their work suffers due to poor morale.
If you don't want to be a programmer, you don't have to be.
You don't have to learn to code.
Do what you like (but be mindful of job supply/demand... we sadly live in a capitalist world and that's not going to change soon).

I hate that interacting with this person I used to love interacting with is now a massive landmine field. It really hurts that this landmine field has only shown up _now_, long since I've already been hurting them with my carelessness, and now I'm deep in the thick of it with no good way out.
