The best I can do with the string under the 吃 character looks like 城到?的??的城市. Not much luck translating the fragments, but I think it's something about cities? I'd really need a much closer look at the unreadable characters.

@hystericempress Hey, sis, could you get me a closer snapshot of as many of those characters as possible? I'm pretty good with a kanji/hanzi dictionary. I think I've identified a few of those as Simplified Chinese? I've already tracked down six characters, am not unwilling to make an evening of it but I need a higher-res look. Thanks!

@frameacloud A little cursory Googling suggests these issues may apply to owls in general, though I don't know enough about barn owls to say if they'd apply to them. Granted, many of the following are true of other domesticated species (ponies are BASTARDS) and have been dealt with...

* largely nocturnal
* very little flocking/bonding instinct
* require fresh/frozen prey; difficult to feed consistently
* require disproportionately large habitats compared to other domesticable animals
* extremely messy and difficult to housetrain
* raccoon-scale destructiveness (*blush*) when bored
* violent when surprised or stressed
* comparative lack of veterinary expertise for the species
* EXTREMELY loud during mating season
* dumber than a bag of hammers O:)

@kistaro There used to be an entire series of New York magazine mail-in contests that centered around this fact. I can't think of a good example offhand, but it was major childhood nostalgia for me since they compiled them all in a book (along with many similar contest formats).
