We are fine, folks, but I am really grateful for all the people who have been fretting over us. <3

Basically the storm is hitting right around the western Louisiana border, much closer to Houston than us here in New Orleans.

According to the latest NOAA models, we are due for some minor flooding risk and some risk of gusts. There's some possibility for storm surge closer to Lake Ponchatrain, but that's a bit too far north of us to be much of a problem.

Worst-case scenario for us is that we can't go outside for a day or so and we have to take the cats in after all. We should be pretty safe from winds, and the terrifying (two story?!?) storm surges we're hear might happen in the west and the southern coast aren't supposed to hit us out here.

New Orleans also has some pretty good drainage systems. I've seen the streets go from ankle-deep to bone dry in under an hour. We should be okay, I'm mostly just worried for the rest of the state.

(They're mostly crappy Trump types but even they shouldn't die in a hurricane...)

@JulieSqveakaroo Oh, we're basically fine down here! We are pretty clear of the storm. It's not even windy or rainy here at the moment.

@Austin_Dern @001zlnv That's another thing I miss about Boston: Indian grocery stores that would sell a huge variety of those for $1.50/bag. They have a tiny selection at our godawful local grocery store but they're like 5.99 a pop. >_<

Shadow came in to visit last night, right on the heels of four of her kids wandering in and out. We both kinda sighed and said, "It's OK, Shadow's fairly chill, we can just let her hang out here for a bit."

Neither Peg nor I remember even letting her back out. I was even briefly worried she'd gotten herself stuck inside, fell into some box or bag or something and met some horrible fate -- which is crazy, because Shadow is pretty vocal when stressed out and I'm sure she'd have let us know she was in trouble.

And there she was on the porch this morning, happy as a... well... happy as the little moochbeast she is.

We're both fairly certain she phased through a wall.

@Oneironott @Aradia Well for starters, the amount of casual racism I see in comedy all the way up to around 2010. It's still there, but... well, seeing Gilda Radner trying to do comic-opera Korean on SNL circa '76 and have it literally come out as "DOYNG DOYNG DOYNG DOYNG DOYNG" was particularly heartbreaking.

I mean, you gotta remember, when I was young it was an ABSOLUTE SHOCK that a single actor, Rock Hudson, came out as gay. It was barely even speakable in all but a few quarters back then.

Also, I went back and watched a few Knight Rider episodes for a lark. The gender politics were far, far worse than I'd even expected -- Michael Knight is ALL OVER every single female character, to the point where his Strong Female Character techie assistant is uploading porn OF THEIR SUPERMODEL CLIENT to KITT because "she knows Michael has certain needs." It's so casually sleazy and indifferent to ANY agency of ANY female character...

@Aradia There's still a lot of cruelty in this world... yet I still just marvel every time I go to watch some piece of media, almost ANY piece of media, from 20 years ago at how many forms of cruelty became unacceptable and it's now taken for granted... If there's one thing I wish the left were better at, it's ADMITTING TO OUR OWN SUCCESSES, especially in the culture war.

Looks like Laura is tracking considerably west of us. Barring a sudden shift, the worst of it should miss us. I can barely even detect Laura's presence on the standard 10-day forecast for Mid-City NOLA.

The current Nat'l Hurricane Center maps show tornado, wind, and storm surge risks as lowest non-zero category for us.

We're probably still gonna try to round up the kitties tonight, or at least keep an "open door" policy for 'em in case they'd like somewhere to hide out and stay dry. But now we're much less concerned about them blowing away. :O
