long post re: fastmail union
An update from @fastmail on my related support ticket:
> Hi Nora,
>
> The recent staff changes were unrelated to union activity and were driven by operational challenges we faced attempting to run the same functions at both our headquarters in Melbourne, Australia, and our satellite office in Philadelphia, USA. With zero hours of working hours time zone overlap for much of the year, we faced difficulties in collaboration, leading to delays in decision-making and project execution. Meanwhile, the need for out-of-hours meetings on both sides was impacting everyone's productivity and work-life balance.
>
> As a small, independent company, ensuring operational efficiency is crucial for our future success. We therefore made the decision to consolidate our product development and marketing activities into a single location, in Melbourne, where we have our most experienced staff. This resulted in the lay-off of some of our US personnel, including 8 union members.
>
> We have always done right by our employees, and this time is no exception. All those laid-off have received a very generous package, including more than 3 months severance pay, to help them move on successfully.
>
> It's important to note that our support and operations teams in the US remain in order to provide continuous 24/7 coverage. We are committed to ongoing negotiations with the Philadelphia union members and are actively hiring for a new operations team member, which will be a union role.
>
> I hope that clarifies what has happened, and I'd personally like to thank you for your ongoing support of Fastmail. We remain dedicated to providing an exceptional email service for years to come.
>
> Yours sincerely,
> Neil Jenkins
> Director & Chief Product Officer
This seems... incongruous with what the union themselves have said. I await more information.
Publicly stating it here so a) other people can see what this company has done and b) to create some accountability and ensure I act on it in a timely fashion.
I have had a @fastmail account for years, at least since 2019. I find it very useful. However, unless they cease their union-busting tactics immediately, I will no longer be using their service, and I recommend that nobody else does either. An "ethical" or "privacy-first" company that can't stomach a union is one you can't trust.

Hey, so we've only got a week left on the campaign and we still need about 136 more preorders to make it happen... but I REALLY want to see these get made.
If you preorder her, we're also now going to include Steam keys for the whole game! Even the DLC!
Apple will be allowing third-party app marketplaces on the iPad in the European Union in iPadOS 18, with beta testers getting a chance to look at the feature in iPadOS 18 beta 2.

Netflix can now serve 100Gbit/s of video (so something like 12,500 individual 4K streams) with an appliance using 100 watts of power. That’s 8 milliwatts for each 4K stream.
Remember that number the next time someone tells you that watching a Netflix show is as bad as driving an SUV or some shit.
Trivial digital electronics question:
What's the name of a digital IC that has 8 inputs, 8 outputs and a single enable pin, so that depending on the signal on the enable pin, the levels on the outputs are either:
- the same as on the inputs
- all low
I'm sure that such a thing must exist, but I can't find it. And I know that I can use eight and-gates, but I don't want to connect 30 pins when in theory 20 should be enough.
Hiya! I'm a programmer looking for full-time work in the SF Bay Area (or remote!)
I'm primarily a Python dev, but I've got significant experience in Java, C#, C++/C, Ruby, and JS.
I've focused a lot on Continuous Integration in recent years but I've got experience with in-house tool development, embedded software, back-end server stuff, and UI/Web/HIL test automation.
I've a lot of experience in digitization/archival work.
