Patreon (?)

1. Patreon screws up and betrays everyone's trust, people abandon it in droves.

2. Patreon rolls it back and promises they won't do it again. Some people fall for this and return.

3. Patreon doubles down on the screw-up with an even more dubious promise that if folks join now they might not get screwed later.

4. Suddenly everyone's tripping over their own tails to take the bait early.

I ask: How does this make any sense? What bit of logic am I just not seeing here?

Medical industry (-) and sarcasm (+++++)

I guess I should be happy they're paying for my TMS—

Wait, no. I'm not gonna praise an exploitative system just for getting some things right. They're still capitalist leeches.

Medical industry (-) and sarcasm (+++++)

I'm really glad I have Kaiser Permanente medical insurance, 'cause otherwise I'd be paying so much more for my meds!

They're only four times more expensive through your pharmacy than anywhere else I've ever gotten them from. What a savings! I feel healthier already!

good morning, everyone

Mastodon web interface. (-)

Step 1: Read timeline via phone client.

Step 2: find toot I want to offer a detailed response to (as in, more than I want to try to type with a crappy virtual keyboard).

Step 3: "Share" URL for toot with myself ("Saved Messages") on Telegram to catch up on from my laptop.

Step 4: Open Telegram on laptop, check messages, click link.

Step 5: Get toot and conversation thread, but desperately search every clickable object on the page, wondering how to actually reply.

Step 6: . . . still wondering.

Any ideas? (About Masto interface stuff, not my choice of phone client or Telegram.)

How Inuit Parents Teach Kids To Control Their Anger [npr.org]

This article is incredible.
npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/

>> "Shouting, 'Think about what you just did. Go to your room!' " Jaw says. "I disagree with that. [...] When we yell at a child [...] We're training them to yell when they get upset and that yelling solves problems."

In contrast, parents who control their own anger are helping their children learn to do the same, Markham says. "Kids learn emotional regulation from us."<<

Hey fun fact! "Aristocracy" translated means "rule of the best/most ideal"

Yes that's right, "meritocracy" and "aristocracy" are perfect synonyms in their original intended meaning. "Meritocracy" is such a language mix nonsense word because the grammatically correct word it was trying to be is "aristocracy". How about that.

anti-[marginalized group] terminology hot take (217 words)

Most bigotry has nothing to do with how the bigot feels about their target - and even when it does, a fair fraction of the time the bigot doesn't recognize that they have any negative feelings about their target.

Bigotry is about structures that harm and marginalize groups of people, and most people participating in those patterns are entirely un-self-conscious in doing so - it's just what is expected of them, and what reasons they have to obey appear to be harmless or good.

...and that means -misia is /not/ more accurate than -phobia to describe the bigotry against a group of people - in fact, it is a reinforcement of the idea that The People Who Hate Us Are The Problem, reinforces the idea that Individuals Being Bad Is The Problem, and leaves out most of the sources of harm.

If I were promoting a substitution, it would be along the lines of my CW: anti-[target]. Anti-Islamic reporting, anti-autistic social norms, anti-aro tropes in media, and so on. Bigots hate and fear Muslims, but bigots don't hate or fear aromantic people for the most part - they just assume it's impossible to be aro and a caring person at the same time. The commonality is not emotions, it is harm.

@natsumisummer okay apparently it's the 30th birthday of the World Wide Web (which is built on top of the internet). tim berners-lee originally published "Information Management: A Proposal" on march 12, 1989

Infosec rambling as a result of 'meta'

“The fediverse” is not a place you have to enter and announce your presence to witness. It’s not a house, it’s not a party. It’s a data stream and most of it is public, and the bits that aren’t are reliant on actors outside of your control to keep private.

Cancelling someone who outed them self as working with the feds isn’t going to keep the feds out. A lot of you know this and to a lot of you it’s symbolic and ideals-based, but it needs to be stated explicitly for those who do not know.

Most of the fediverse is public, most of it is unredactable, most of it is undeniable. Our current security calculus means it’s trivial, once an instance admin (or the wayback machine) gets a hold of your post, to prove you posted it— forever. Even if you delete it.

The fediverse has the same infosec concerns as birdsite did, and more, and worse. It presents opportunities for a better social space, but in the end you need to either limit posts to things you don’t care who sees, or things you’ve done very in depth risk assessment on with deep knowledge the fediverse security and deniability calculus.

That’s a shortcoming of the fediverse and AP. It’s one specific actors are working on fixing, but it’s not there yet and won’t be for some time.

Keep your “stuff” deniable. Keep it off line. The fed taps do not have high visibility accounts like that guy. The fed taps probably do not have accounts.

In light of Piko Interactive announcing pre-orders for new physical media retro game carts:

Reminder PIko Interactive is run by a scumlord who got caught stealing GPL emulator code for their PC "ports" then aired dirty laundry that came up during the prior failed negotiation to get a license when called out on it.

They also tried to wipe several fan translation patches off the internet after pressing carts of games they did not fully have the rights to anyway.

Gross company.

I hope that, whoever you are that takes the time to read this, you know deep within your heart that you deserve to be here.

Take a moment and remind yourself that you exist. That you should exist. That you belong in the world, with all its disappointments and its delights. That you deserve happiness. That you deserve to love yourself simply for the magic of being alive.

I know it's hard work every day to be good to yourself and others. I see how hard it is. I believe in you, and others do too.
